My friend and I have and 89 YJ for a trail rig so we dont kill out our dd jeeps. This was a good decision since weve gone through 2 transmissions now. We had this thing in some serious mud, like almost slopping in through the door openings and now the transmission is shot. I've never heard of an auto being destroyed by mud, but I don't really know. Any info or personal experience would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, mud will kill an automatic, so will water, and no AT fluid, wrong fluid, overheating. as far as personal experience, no mud for mine, but once, this time at band camp, I heard of a Jeep's tranny going south because the mud was too deep.

We're now finding out that that may be what it was, when we replaced this transmission it was an old used one from a junk yard we didnt notice anything that looked like a vent tube but are now reading about it in the manual. Would this fix our problem? It seems like there are enough pictures of XJs bogging through mud and I know most of them probably have autos.

the vent tube is on top of the trans, if you dunk the trans and don't have the vent tube in place then the cool water makes the trans suck in air, if the tube is under mud it will suck in mud, mud is bad for a trans.
When you replace this one make sure you run a rubber hose from the vent tube up to the top of the firewall, that way you don't have to worry about it. The trans is pretty well sealed except for the vent.

Thanks a lot. I think were gonna do what we can to clean this one out. (I'm optimistic, but realistic.) Whatever we do, we will make sure we've got all the breather hoses at a proper height.
