Hey all first queston here.... i purchased a 89 renix xj a few months ago not running.
I have changed the gas tank, fuel filter, fuel pump and new cheap injectors to get it running... runs ok
Heres my questions ... i put water into the over flow / pressure tanks for the cooling system.
The overflow tank then bubbles like crazy and the water dis a pears ive filled that guy three times ( i realize it needs 3 gallons but i get pretty worried when it bubbles like crazy and then is gone. ) and the water disappears then there are no leaks and the oil is not getting infused with water.
1 Is this normal ?
2 what is the proper/best procedure for filling the coolant level
3 I put water in and gone... Could this b a head gasket ?

"Burping" a closed cooling system does take patience. It can take several heat/cool cycles to purge all of the air out.

Some people do one or more of the following to speed the process.

1. When changing out the thermostat, drill a small hole through the flange and mount the thermostat with the hole at the 12:00 position. This allows entrapped air to exit the block while the thermostat is still closed.

2. Park on a hill nose down. This raises the expansion tank higher to allow the air to escape into the tank.

3. Loosen/remove the temperature gauge sending unit on the rear of the head (often along with #2 above). This let the air out of the block without having to circulate through the system. Once the air bleeds out, tighten/reinstall the sender. (beware, the sender can snap off if you overtighten or is just corroded in the head.)

4. Vacuum fill using a Coolant vacuum filler kit. (You can probably rent one at a local autoparts). May take several cycles to complete.

5. Convert to open system and eliminate this whole ritual.

Is it possible you have a blown head gasket? Sure. Do you see any smoke out the tailpipe. White-ish smoke indicates you're burning water (coolant). You can also smell the antifreeze in the exhaust. If you suspect you have a blown head gasket, there are other tests you can do to verify or eliminate.

First, I'd try to get all the air out first, then see if you can maintain coolant level.

Thank u very much for the reply...... Because i bought the jeep that was sitting i have not been putting coolant into the block just water... So i dont see white smoke and or water coming out the tail pipe...
I also am not seeing water in the oil
I will try and burp it properly and see if it helps.... its a really violent bubbling ( is that a word) coming up to the tank and then after it sits for 10 min ... nothing in the tank anymore...
Will report back
