'88 Cherokee Wiper Arm Removal

Okay, I need to get to the wiper motor in my Cherokee, but I cannot get the arm off lol.

I see the clip that I need to remove, and it appears to come about 3/4 of the way out or so and stops. I'm baffled. If I pull much harder, I'm going to bust something. Is there a trick?

You can use a Dremel cut-off wheel.

You could try using some rags, a block of hardwood, and a couple of flat blade screwdrivers. Pad the body, place the hardwood, put the tips of the two screwdrivers under the edge of the wiper arm and alternate prying up--if you try this and damage the body, I was never here and never suggested anything of the sort.

Haha! Thanks. Not the easiest thing in the world, eh? They just stopped working one day, and I'm convinced the motor is good, so I want to run a remote switch. *sigh*

Did you check that pesky little 4.8 amp circuit breaker in the fuse block? My 13 EEEE like to kick the crap out of those until the male connectors on the back break.
 
All I did was pull that tab out a little bit (1/2" or so) with a screw driver and then pull straight up on the wiper to lift the arm off the splined post. The tab doesn't come all the way out... I tried like hell to get it all the way out before I realized it.

The oldest and nastiest arm on my 90 popped right off, the other two I had to destroy with a Dremel.

Wire wheeled the splines clean and slobbered anti-seize on them for next time.
 
They get a little stuck, but I've never seen one that would have benefited from anti-seize.

Lift the arm up as high as it'll go, lever the lock tab over until it stops, then lift the arm straight up off the splines.
 
X2 on what everyone already said. The rear wiper arm on my XJ likes to get stuck but the front ones never do.

The tab pulls out a little, can do it with a flat blade screwdriver as said, then release the wiper arm and it'll pull back down and rest on the tab as a stop, which takes the sideways force off the splines. After that the arm should just lift right off.

If it doesn't, what works great is a small piece of wood (about 1/2" thick) and a 21mm box wrench. The longer side of the open end of the box wrench makes a great prybar to get under just the edge of the metal cup without grabbing the splined shaft as well. I actually used the handle of my BFH held sideways but it can be tough to avoid marring the windshield/rear window - yeah, I removed my wiper arm with the same tools I remove LCAs with :eyes:
 
where did you put the floor jack and wheel chocks to get the wiper off?:huh::laugh2:

EDIT: it was tough to get at them without putting the jack underneath, didn't really need the floor chocks though:

This certainly makes under-vehicle maintenance a lot easier! Hope 'burkemx' sees this. He'll know what to change for his 200k fix-up.
