8.25 with ARB, fresh brakes, and toasted gears...

I have my 29 spline 8.25 up for sale. It's got a nearly new(installed end of August) ARB, fresh brakes, and 4.56s that I bought from Dave Nay that howl like a coyote at a full moon . I will sell complete or part it out. I re did the brakes two days ago, replacing one of the wheel cylinders. I'd like to get 700 for the whole thing, or will part it out as follows:

ARB with old style compressor and blue line(you will need a wiring harness from ARB, approx 30$ I'm told) - 650$

Stock 29 spline shafts - 75$

Stock 29 spline trak-lock, needs shims or clutch rebuild kit, great for an upgrade from 27 spline shafts - 50$

Housing with fresh brakes and pre-drilled for ARB, 50$

This stuff is still under my Jeep and it may be next month before it actually comes out, I'm just trying to line up buyers/money so I can afford the D44 to replace it. Thanks for looking.

<edit> my comment about the gears is not intended to discredit Dave Nay, he did inform me that they were noisy when I bought them. That is all</edit>

PS I'm in Blacksburg VA and will ship at buyers expense, but would prefer not to ship the housing.

I'm interested in the shafts....

PM'd you

I am interested in the ARB carrier only.
I have all the rest of it.
Would yah take 400$ for just the carrier??
Is it low speed or high? IE: 3:55 and below or up?
Was the locker in operation when the gears grenaded??
If so it needs to be serviced or the seals will eventually fail from contamination. (Been there done that.)
Terry.
PS: I say 400-500$ because I just sold my new d35 arb for 400.
What I paid from ARB downtown seattle (Rebuilt locker.)

The gears are not grenaded. I'm driving around on them right now. They're just howling, and I don't want someone buying this axle and putting it under their jeep and complaining that I didn't tell them of the howling. All 8.25 carriers are the same. There is no break. I've only actually activated the locker once 'cause I never got the new wiring harness myself. I just ran my blue line to a friend's ARB in his Jeep and test it out. There shouldn't be any conamination, there hasn't been any metal in the diff when I've opened the cover, and everything but the gears is brand new. I would take 500$ for just the locker plus shipping. let me know if you're interested.

BTW, for everyone else, I have the disc kit brackets from a TSM kit, you would need calipers, rotors and tiny little flex lines to go from the caliper to the hardline. I have junkyard cores for the caliper. I'll throw it all in if you buy the whole axle. Or 100$ for it.

I may be interested in the whole thing. Are the gears for sure gonna die soon, or is it just noisy?

Just noisy. I've been driving on them for about a month, and haven't noticed anything abnormal going on. Last I checked the fluid there wasn't any metal in it. I wouldn't say that they'd last indefinately, but I don't think they're gonna go out anytime in the near future. It's just that I want deeper gears and better clearance and a D44 affords me all of that. I actually think the noise has lessened or I've gotten used to it. Probably the latter. I see you're in Knoxville. I'd be willing to meet halfway to avoid shipping. Let me know.

BTW Lucas, if you want, I can *hopefully* get this pulled next weekend.

Cool Im trying to come up with the $ Right now.
(Interested in a really cool 55" gas powerd rc boat???)
Still what about the tracklock If I cant aford the ARB right now
or someone beats me to it?
Terry.
PS I didnt know there wasnt any size break in the 8.25. I guess I
can get my 4:10s installed reguarless of the carrier then right?

Not really interested in trades, I'm just trying to raise enough money to pay for a modded D44. You're welcome to the track-lock, it's sitting in my garage at home(300 miles from me), but I could prolly get it by thanksgiving if you wanted. Just let me know what you decide. I'm hoping that one of you pulls through for me so I can get this 44. Thanks

Ary

edit: yes, your 4.10s will not be a problem.

Well what about trades for a XJ 44?
How much cash would you want if I was able to get a clean housing?

Lucas, I've already negotiated for a clean, well-maintained D44 with 4.56s and a detroit. It would cost me way more to build one up to that, than get this one already built. Thanks for the offer though.

Well I talked to the guy and he said that the axle was in really bad shape, when he had originally thought it was pristine. So I'm up in the air as to what to do now. I can just put new gears in the 8.25 or I will sell/trade. Any takers on the second option?? Thanks

Ary

Just so everyone knows, I've decided to keep the axle. I'm just gonna put new gears in and call it good. I wanted deeper gearing, but I think I'll just drop down a tire size and get the little bit of extra pep I wanted. 33's are worn anyway, and I've got 32s in the garage. Anyway thanks for the interest.

Ary-
Please PM me about the noise. I'm trying to figure out what "normal" noise for an 8.25 is, as I also have some howling. Mine does it between 40-50mph, and louder on decelleration. The strange thing is, my wife's ZJ does a VERY similar noise, and she has the Dana 44a. Are these rears just noisy? I assume the guy that did your gears set them correctly. Mine have the factory set-up, other than swapping carrier and resetting backlash.

Hey guys, Have you checked your back lash? If the patern and bearings are good then thats where I'd look. The 8.25 likes to run tight. .006 - .008
I set mine right at .007"

I don't suppose you want to donate the gears to someone who wants to learn to set up diffs do you? I fgured that if they're already toasted I don't have a lot to lose.

8.25 gears

Im kind of interested in the bad gears if you buy new ones. I want to learn to do setups, but i dont want to experiment with a new set if (when) things go bad. Please let me know what you're doing with them after the new ones go in. thanks.

oops, that was supposed to be a PM.
