Broke the retaining bolt for the center pin in my 8.25. Anyone know how to get the rest of it out? Still has some threads in the carrier

Can't pull the carrier. Need to remove the center pin to remove the c-clips so the axles will come out. If you have a right angle drill, you can get in there but you still need to be very careful to not mess up the threads. May be able to come at it from the back side too. I don't remember if the hole goes all the way through or if it's just countersunk.

It is hardened. Right angle drill may fit if you can get a small short bit and a small enough drill. or get a big air hammer and beat it until that bolt snaps and then u can get the carrier out and left hand drill bit the sucker out

sledge hammer on the cross pin?
drill it out and tap it 1-2 sizes bigger?
if you are not going to re use the carrier just start cutting it with a angle grinder.

Got the thing out.. Now I'm having problems finding a relacement. Apparently limited slip has a different cross pin than the open diff.

Or at least 27 spline 8.25 open is different than 99 ls

So it looks like the dana part number one of the diff places in Rancho gave me (432450) is also from a D35... SO hopefully a quick junkyard run tomorrow will source me one plus a few spares. Fingers crossed..

How did you get the broken one out? I broke one in chevy G20 van few years back ended up with a hammer and a punch and beat the broken one out and replaced the carrier with one from a junkyard.

I might have one . Comenover

I had to drill it out and used an Irwin easy-out.. took a while. This 2-3 hr job took literally 12hrs with all the store trips and I am still not done.

Need to get a 10th D30 stud, brake pads for the Liberty Disc conversion, do the wheel bearing for the drivers side, reinstall the center pin, and finish assembly.

Thanks for the offer Jon but I need to go to the junkyard for a front shaft once Seal and I install Josh's 231 on my 99 anyway.

ok let me know

Happens to me the first time I worded in the old Jeep.

I hit it with a mini sledge and punch. The pin is pretty soft and small just risk damaging the carrier. All ended well for me and only took a few minutes. Could have made it worse, glad you went the safe route

Yeh it wasn't fun. Also, the 35 bolt fits, it just used a 1/4" 12 point instead of a 8mm 6 point
