700R4's-What came for T/C's

I know that 700R4's where available behind the 2.8 in GM vehicles. Anyone have a link to the info on what was available for T/C's at that time? Or knowledge of what was used. My boat anchor is on the way out and the only smart thing to do is upgrade to the 3.4. I'd like to consider swapping in the OD auto later this year and was wondering what my choices were without going to AA or Novak for an adapter. Thanks!

The 700R4 that came in the 2.8L is a serious POS. I went through three of them on my 86 Blazer. See if the 700R4 out another GM model will work. Its normally a great transmission.

OK, point made. I'll check that out. I did follow a link earlier today that discussed the 700R4 and there was a bunch of for and against comments. I'm thinking that I need to watch out for certain years or constructions to be safe.

My 88 Chevy truck FSM lists a number of transfer cases, all New Process. There's an all-gear 205, and chain-drive 207,208, 231HD and 241. I think my K2500 (with a 700R4) has a 241, but I'm not sure. It might be a 231. I never bothered to look.

Early 700R4's are pretty notorious. My 88 made it to just under 30 thousand miles before needing a total rebuild. Granted, it's a plow truck, but still....

Thanks Matt! In my case, I think that behind the 2.8 when it was used they probably only used the chain driven 207, 208 and 231HD. I guess the next question is; If everyone had a choice of the above T/C's, what would you pick to mate to a 700R4 that's behind a 3.4L? I don't want to have to clock anything around as I don't have the fabbing facilities for shift linkage. Ideas????? :dunno: Before anyone comes up with Atlas and a few others. This is all going into a low milage 84 that is real solid and I want to keep it on the "tame" side. I do more fishing and camping than I do rock crawling. Wonder if a 231 with an SYE wouldn't be the best choice, hmmmm. . .
