6x9 speaker replacement?

Alright, if you've been surfing the board you will know that I recently bought a super stock 89 xj, everything stock! and clean! Now for my question. My old man pulled a brand new kenwood HU, and 4 6x9s from a ford my sister wreckskied. I'm talking about 1k worth of equipment when installed. He mailed it to me Monday, being he's in jerz and im in NC. Has anyone on he fabbed up some 6x9" speakers to replace the factory 4? I know I'll have to re-wire the whole thing, and find a way to mount the HU.. (crutchfield probally makes a kit for that, ill have to look into it)

Any advice is welcome

I'm guessing you've got a cassette player in your Jeep right now? Is it single or double din? I'm guessing single, so you could probably buy a car kit either way to get the HU to work.

As for the 6x9's. You can get them to work... you'll need to cut a little bit bigger hole in the front doors and make a bracket for the rear hatch. it'll take time and patience but is definitely doable.

Probably don't need to re-wire, just clip off the factory connectors and get some wire terminals to fit the speakers depending on what they are. Some speakers have two terminals whereas some have little screw things that you stick the wire through, and you tighten the down the screw.

Well, its just a am/fm radio... It looks pretty small for me, I was actually thinking of fabbing a way to mount it in the glove compartment (keep the thieves from window shopping) and put my CB where the stock radio is, since they look very very similar in size. As I said before if anyone has done a install like this please chime in for me, if not guess it'll have to wait till i tear into the jeep to figure it out. My wifes going to be so stoked with engine parts and electronics everywhere!

You'll need to take measurements to see if that'll even work in the glove box. You can get the wires in there easy enough but will need to buy some wire to extend it.

That's how I put my iPod connector into the glove box to stash the iPod there so it's unseen. Drilled a hole into the side inside the box and that goes into the stereo HU area.

If you're worried about thieves, just get a detacheable face one or one or mock up some kind of stealth shield to cover it up so it looks like nothing is there when not in use. I think a thief would be as likely to steal your CB as they would a stereo.

Check the depth of the speakers you plan on sticking in the front door as well. Don't want your window hitting them or the metal sheath thing that's in there holding the cable that helps window go up and down. I had some 6.5's in there and the sheathing came down and hit the speaker, frying my HU and nearly blew the amp.

If it were me, I'd maybe even just go get some of those 6x9 boxes for the rear, Fitting in that hath is not going to be easy and, for the best sound, you'll want to make the speaker grills bigger.

it's more involvled than just cutting a bigger hole up front, the back of the speaker is going to hit the window when rolled all the way down if you just hack a bigger hole and jam the speaker in. take the door panel off and roll the window all the way down, take a look at how much space you have back there and plan from there.
