Ummmm.....looks like I'm trying since i'm a member here:gee: . Ease off the caps lock pal. A bit difficult to join a club that you don't know exists. I figured I would try good old fashioned networking as a starting point... apparently asking questions of other members is now looked down upon.

haha sorry. didn't mean to sound like an ass there. in one of my previous posts i mentioned deepwoods if you were looking to join a club. there's a bunch of places that we wheel in NH and people are always willing to help out with anything jeep related. again, sorry if the tone didn't come across well.... but anyway, deepwoodsextreme.com is the website, and if you want to PM me you email address i can get you in contact with someone who can let ya know more about joining, if your interested

Okay, so Steve's and Domenics don't sell Hack'n'Taps for my 91 242. Recommended Tom Woods....say it isn't so.:dunno:

So something my buddy and I have been wondering. How do you make any money working on Jeeps (XJs in particular)? No way you can accurately quote a suspension job, so do you just charge by the hour? It seems just as things are going smoothly a bolt will break or a bushing will be siezed to a bolt. How do these shops plan for cutting open floors, removing bolts, and rewelding?

Probably like most other auto shops. You charge the book rate for the job, if it takes you less time to do it then you make out. If you are having a cruddy day and it takes long obviously you dont make as much. For example, today i did a radiator on a 96 tercel, book rate was 1.4 hrs. It took me about 25 minutes to do it. The customer got charged for 1.4 hrs. Now say every bolt i touched broke, the clamps broke and everything went wrong and it took me 2hrs...the customer still would have been charged 1.4 hrs. Thats the way my shop works and I know most other shops and dealers do as well. I am not saying all of them do but most do.

Also don't forget that the bolt that just broke cost them $.25 and they charged you $1.00. This is why a lot of shops will not use parts that you bring them. You cannot bring a steak into a restaraunt and ask them to cook it for you and only charge labor- same principal. Parts equal money.
