44s & a 3 link

Ive been putting a parts list together for what i want before rocktoberfest:

Limiting straps
12 inch travel bilstein 5150s, and some 5100s for the rear.
Hydro assist, i want to be able to turn these 35s with ease. Ill probably run a stock XJ box with a wj power steering pump. Im not sure on the ram yet. Would you guys reccomend drilling and tapping the box myself? Or sending it out, if sending it out, where would you reccomend?

when you go to the hydro look at the trail gear set up. super affordable and turned the 37's easier than stockers.

Before you bother doing hydro assist try a durango steering box, and maybe the WJ pump as well. Just adding a durango box made my steering way better.

stock box with WJ pump and a 4.5" pulley and I can turn my 35s with one finger at idle. hydro will just introduce more complexity into your setup and risk breaking knuckles.

Hydro assist don't usually break knuckles. once the range of the box stops the fluid pushing the ram stops.

Full hydro can though.

Alone it won't but if you are in a situation where a tire is pinned it allows you to put much more force on the knuckle if you are still within the range of the box. At least with an upgraded pump (without hydro) setup you still have your arms strength as a gauge and a fuse.

yea but if youre in that kind of situation, you can simply... not turn the weight of the jeep into a rock.

didn't at one time you say you daily drive this? would you want to run a hydro set up for a DD?

Have you run assist or full hydro before?

x2

You can drill and tap the box yourself definitely, and most people choose to rebuild the box at the same time.

Or you can send it out to PSC. I know Chris (vetteboy on here) did this and was very happy with the results. They upgrade a few of the internals IIRC. I would call up PSC and speak to someone about it if you have questions.

are people really saying that a regular linked steering setup is better than full hydro because you cant break knuckles?

pretty silly point to argue. i dont go wheeling and see people with full hydro's knuckles constantly cracking

Thanks for the advice guys, but I've got my mind pretty much set on hydro assist. My box is on its way out anyway, so I figure that ill replace it with a durango box, and do the wj pump at the same time. If I feel its good enough then I won't go hydro assist....but you also need to reme, ber I'm spoold front and rear right now.

meh, i'd go straight to assist. the WJ pump/durango box combo worked great in my old jeep... which was an open front with skinny 33s. i remember sam saying it didnt feel like much (if any) improvement going to the WJ pump after we put it in.

Me personally I would probably go straight to assist as well like Adam said.

Okay, i just have to get a little more cash, then im going to order a new XJ box (ive heard its better with assist) and send it to psc, a wj pump, not sure on the pulley size, some hydraulic lines, and a ram. Still unsure of the ram size but im sure the guys at psc will know what to hook me up with.

I def. was not saying anything against him running hydro. So sorry for beating a dead horse. Just speaking from what I have heard.

now you know how i felt on my way down to pick up those tires from you when i hit the pothole and the death wobble kicked in. i thought my jeep was going to come apart.

i think nitro was running a deal on shafts. not sure if it was for a specific axle but i swear i saw a sale on them somewhere. maybe quadratec?

how did your frame stiffeners come out?

Ha, ive never gotten deathwobble, only a very mild case of the wobbles. Wasnt bad or scary at all.

Ive actually got some real goood quotes for tenfactory shafts on pirate4x4, i just have to get some more cash:doh:
