i run 4.88 with 35" mt/r's and love the setup. I cruise 80 as comfortably as one can cruise 80 with 6.5" of lift and 35's.. rpm's are certainly not an issue.
Finally went with 4.88's (w/33's and auto) a few weeks ago. Thought about it for quite a while before I made the change. Did the percent change, rpm at various speeds, amount of hwy driving, etc. etc. I searched the threads as well. I don't recall even 1 post that didn't like that combo. And if someone would do a poll, I think most would go this route: 4:88.s with 33's. My tranny likes it, my engine likes it and most of all I LIKE IT. Milage did not suffer at all, but then, I don't drive 75 (65 / 70). Still gets 17 - 18 mpg (105K on the odometer). And that's my .02
So i am getting nearer to this combo but when calling for quotes on the install, i got the "4.88's and 33's!" thats crazy talk..your going waaayy to deep youll be fine with 4.10 or at most 4.56's if you ever want to go bigger....your highway will suck itll be screemin at highway speeds blah blah.. this is from people i consider[ered] knowlegable, not the 4wheelparts guys they dont really care around here..
all this after i had finally settled on 4.88's from reading Crash's sticky and other post's similar to this one...
I dont get it..
Yes it is my DD and Yes it is an Auto and Yes i live in colorado.., Yes i go to the mountains and yes i will sometimes tow things- biggest the pop up camper we need...
anyone care to explain to me why these people are telling not to go so deep?
that my highway would be gone....
sorry.. i am annoyed..
thanks

they are getting an image of you in there head going down the highway about 70 mph at 5k rpms... they have probley never seen it, people fear what they dont know... and last but not least IT WILL WORK take them your jeep, and money ofcourse and there not going to say "no we wont take your money and install them thar gears in that thar jeep because its stupid... take your money somewhere else..." there getting paid the same wether its 1.17 or 7.17s...

They say it's too deep because they normaly install gears in full size trucks with V8's that have way more power and different tranny ratio's. My jeep with 33's and 4.88's cruised under 3k down the interstate with no problem. I loved the extra power I had before going to 35's.

Most shops that have been gearing jeeps are still thinking CJ/YJ/TJ which do not have overdrive, therefor they would be correct (yes, i know newer tj's have overdrives). 4.88 and 33 in a cherokee is perfect, trust the guys that run them.
I run 4.88's with 33's with a 4.0 and an AX-15....at 70 MPH, i run right at about 3000 RPM and get about 17 MPG. Zero regrets and it will be a little better around town if and when i upgrade to 35's.
