38's....

I have a friend with dual 9 inch axles and 4.88's. He can break the tires loose on pavement (barely...but he can do it) and he is running 39.5" Iroks.

I'm swapping out my axles for a HPD30/Ford 8.8 combo with 4.88's. I am going to run 38.5 MT Baja Claws on it. The 8.8 is a LSD. I got a great deal on the axles and gear sets all together NIB for $300. I'm searching for a killer deal on D60's at the moment. I think I found a set. If the guy lets me have them they are $125 each. I'll probably truss the 8.8 and the D30 for now. I'm going to lift the XJ from 4.5" to 10" and I have custom built long arms. I'll make sure to take pics of the setup when I get it all together and start the process.

Should be a fun build.

wasting your time with that dana 30 man, i broke mine in south florida with 35's, are you serious?

the 8.8 might be okay if you dont get out of the mud.

the truss wont be the issue, the axle shafts just cant turn that kind of weight at that kind of gearing with the kind of horsepower you're going to be putting through it.

8.8s tougher then a 44...run it in whatever you want. im running 5:13s, and 38 inch SXs in a 44/8.8 combo, and i have more faith in my rear 8.8 then the 44.

i wheeled it last weekend, and bounced it off rocks, ledges, mud, hill climbs, wide open hills etc and neither gave me any problem

stock gears and axles and I run it every weekend

...Nothing has broken yet because there isn't any power to get to the rear wheels. You can sit there with the foot on the throttle all day and it's just gonna burn up inside the tranny.


Think of it simply as a 21 speed schwinn. You put that bad boy in 3/7, and you can barely get moving from a stop. Let alone go up any hills. All you're gonna do it strain your legs and make them sore. Some concept goes for transmissions, except they get really hot and burn up.

Me and my buddies all will be running 37s or bigger but forget stock axles. I got a d44 front welded w/ 4.88s, and a ford 9 in with a detriot and 4.88s and a nodular case. Than my brother is on 38.5s with a 10bolt/14bolt. Than my buddies mj is on 42 w/ a dana 44/60.
