Heres my deal im going to put on a rubicon 5.5 long arm kit on my 2000 jeep xj and was wandering if i should just step up to a 35 general grabber or a 33 general grabber

35". if you are wondering now, you will be wishing you hadn't wasted the money on the 33"s in a couple months... ask me how I know.

42's

just kidding, well maybee not, what are you gonna do as far as gears steering and axle shafts

How do you know?

Well you did want someone to ask.;)

Because I went with 33"s. I did so because it was a lot less work to fit them and I was working on a 'budget'

unfortunately everyone I wheel with is running 35"s or greater, so I am constantly the smallest rig on the trail.

now, I am working on fitting 35"s where 33"s just barely fit (bald ones I might add).

how hard is it to fit a 35

how hard is it to fit a 35

depends on what you want... with 5.5" of lift, you shouldn't have too tough a time.

my jeep sits low and has a lot of uptravel.

like ^he said, proper backspacing, bumpstops and fender trimming.

What gears do plan on?
alloy shafts? Lockers? Armor?

What kind of wheeling do you plan on?
35s will be better in deep rocks, but you can get there with 33s

I would (& did) go to 33s , do all the other stuff ( cage, stiffeners, winch) then think about 35s
plus, it gives you time to learn how to drive. Folks are more forgiving of a smaller rig having issues on a hard trail, than the guy with every part money can buy , stuck in the mall parking lot.

I have a 99 with the 5.5" r.e. long arm kit, currently on 33's.

I want 35's.

I have my front and rear fenders cut, 3.75" backspacing, and I think 35's will fit no problem on mine.

I'm not to far from you (fullerton) and have a couple of rigs on 35's.

If you want, run up here this weekend and look for yourself how hard it is to fit them..

I went from 32s to 35s . Got a great deal on some used ones . Triming fenders is a must and bumpstops
to. If you dont have gears be ready for embarassment. I was shamed into gears ,lockers ect... 35s and
stock gears with open diffs will perform miserably . If you dont gear or lock you're much better off with smaller tires. If you are going to put gears in for 33s might as well step up to 455s and get the bigger tire . You may need to upgrade axels if you wheel hard. The larger you go the more stress on everything.. My problem is now that im on 35s geared and locked I kinda want 37s.

Don't pick your tire size based on lift...Pick it based on your build and what you actually plan on doing. I run 35's but I run a 44 front and 8.8 rear. I play in the rocks and want to go bigger. 33's are great for expedition style wheeling though if that is more your thing.

35s require a lot mor money to run properly than a 33 IMO.

With 35s a regear is pretty much required, as well as upgraded brakes, chromoly axle shafts... unless you wheel at the mall.

33s are less rotating mass, my jeep was quicker with 33s and 3.73s, then it is now 35s and 4.88s

Id stick to 33s, wheel your jeep, if you want to push it further, then go to 35s.

thanks for all the input i might be running 33's till my budget permits me to do the axels and regear and steering. I'llbe doing alot of long expedition style wheeling untill i can strengthen everything to really start getting into the technical stuff.

There's ALOT of truth here, I would stay on 33's unless you plan on blowing money on bigger brakes, gears, and alloys.

I'm running 35's with 5.5" RE lift and after trimming the tires fit perfectly. I will say the brakes are only adequet but I'm not having issues with axles. I have about as light of a right foot as one can have while still making through John Bull and other legit trails. I'm not saying I won't break them, but I've spent exactly zero dollars on upgrades so far.

FYI the difference in rotating mass between 33" tires and 35" tires can be nothing if you also upgrade from steel rims to alloys. Other than force created by the extra leverage of the 1" larger diameter, you basically are putting the same force on the axles at that point. I know I'm a whooping 1 sample size but so far so good.
