33" tire, 4.56 or 4.??

I'll chime in and say 4.56 and 33" (closer to 32" in reality) is great through the entire power band. Been driving this config for nearly 4 years and no complaints.

Do you drive your Jeep daily? If so what is your fuel economy? I am currently pushing 33x12.50 KM2s and want to re-gear in my near future and my Jeep is my daily so fuel economy is important but I still want the power to scoot around. Since the 33s went on, with the 3.55s the Jeep just doesn't feel like the fun nimble vehicle that it used to be.

4.56's with 33's is a geat combo, you'll have a tad more grunt/power than it would have in stock form, great for towing and a decent mpg.

Not even remotely close...4.56/33"

I have the same app!

out of curiosity, what mileage are you guys with 33"/4.56 and 33"/4.88 are getting in town and on the highway with easy driving? I was thinking of 33" and 4.10 to maintain a decent mileage...

Having owned 3 XJ's over the past 17 years, this is my experience.

Operating at approx 4500 ft elevation, in my current 2000 XJ, I average 16 mpg on the freeway with 285/75/16 tires (33"), 180,000mi 4.0, AW4 trans, 6" lift. I typically travel at 70-75mph. Many have found that their AW4 will constantly jump from 3rd to OD on the freeway with 4:56's and get 2-3 mpg less. I had this problem with my 89 running 4:56's and 33's a few years ago.

This horse has been beat to death.....gearing charts don't reflect compensation for elevation, wind resistance due to lift/ roof rack/rooftop spare, rolling resistance due to heavier tires/wheels, HD bumpers and armor/cargo weight, HP loss as motor ages, etc.

Your rig will consume more fuel by undergearing that it will by overgearing, as it will have to work harder to maintain the same speed. Err on the side of a numerically higher ratio.

Gearing is like an oil thread, but take some of these guy up on their offer to ride in their jeep. Personally I was going with 34x10.50 LTB and 4.30 gearing was what it would take to keep my speedometer acurate.

If you are a casual driver 4.10s will be fine.
If you are still using a throttle like an on/off switch then 4.56s will be the better solution. Or 4.10s and set of street tires.

Now that my jeep is a trailer queen and sitting on 37s, I'm debating 4.88, 5.13, or 5.38.

i know this is kinda a thread jack... but what has 4.10 axles stock? probably arent bolt in huh?

Honda Passport (D44 4.10 or 4.30)
Isuzu Rodeo (D44 4.10, 4.30, or 4.56)
Most full size pickups have a 4.10 option
4cyc Toyota and Nissan Pickups (Toy 8" or Nissan H233 <33 spline shafts and 9.25" ring gear>
4cyc Wranglers
J10 D44 or AMC 20

Actually if your Speedo has never been changed 33 and 4.56 will bring ur Speedo back to stock if you care!
False, 4.10s will actually be a closer match.

My old supra had 4.10 in it...talk about an interesting ride. JTM, you saying 4.10 and 33" would work alright? I'm not one to hot rod everywhere...

I have 4.10 gears at the moment with 32's and it is good but when I go to 35's soon I am going to regear to 4.88's but wish I could do 5.13's.

488's on a 89 with a auto pushing 35's and i only get 20 to 21 MPG. Never got over 20 with the same gears and 33's but it would run real nice on the freeway out here.I live 300 feet above sea level so it is up hill no matter which way i go to play.Man i am starting to sound like my DAD now.LOL.

Its all about what you want. I'd go 4.10 if I was still driving it daily and I knew I wasn't going bigger than 33s. If I can push 34/10.50 LTBs with 4.30s and minimal shifting, then 4.10s should be fine with 33s.

My FRS has 4.10s ;)

What about running 4:27's?
Little better than 4:10 not as low as 4:56.
Has anybody run this combo?

I'm running a 4.27/4.30 combo in my dana 44s (Waggy Front/Honda Rear)
