The more I look, the less I find descent 4x4 XJ's anymore, Im sure you guys feel my pain. Ive researched this topic over the last few days, seems fairly simple and everything bolts right up. Have any of u SEC guys done this and kept the rig a while? Pros/Cons if any?

Has anyone came across a write up thread with pics of the swap? All Ive found is "I wanna do this" or "I did this at some point", no detailed write up on the swap that Ive found as of yet.

:looney:

It's been done but I don't know of a good write-up. Dealing with the transmission is the biggest hurdle in terms of swapping and making sure the wiring connections work correctly.

Most everything will just bolt in. It's a matter of having all of the pieces to do the job. The t-case shifter linkages, lever, bezels, etc are all things that seem to be forgotten until the day of the swap.

Search for the "Rusty's" Jeep build. We did everything you are thinking of on a 2001 2WD XJ all in a day.

Finding all the parts will be one thing... several with blown motors out there. Did the ZJ's and WJ's use the aw4 as well? Seem to be a lot more of them with blown motors... good potential donor candidates if their stuff will bolt up which it should I believe...

Thanks for the link Ill check it out!

Feel free to contact me as im doing this now.

I had to sell my White 6.5" lifted 4x4 XJ due to some family health issues and kept my white 4x2 XJ to daily drive.
White 99-01's are hard to find so decided to convert this 4x2 since I had most of the lift, bumpers, axles, etc in the garage already from not finishing my 4x4 build exactly the way I wanted it.

Here is what I know you need on the 97-01's:

1. 4x4 trans / tcase with same spline count
2. the linkage from the tcase to floor shifter, and the floor shifter
3. the tcase linkage bracket that bolts to the body
4. front axle
5. both drive shafts

Now what you have to keep in mind is the year XJ you have or get.
97-01 trannys had their own harness plug type
where the 96 and older had their own plug type but around 91 they went from 21 to 23 spline counts so need to consider that.

Feel free to message me, call me, email me......

We've done several.

With all the parts in your garage/yard at the same time...weekend swap if you are decent at working on these things.

My current MJ trail rig was 2wd when I got it.

I bought the crew cab MJ that Dave had for sale on here back in December...it's 2wd also. It will be 4wd before the project is done.

Can't add anything to the thread that hasn't already been said except it was cheaper for me to buy a whole 98 xj with a blown engine back in the middle of December than to buy the parts piece by piece. Plus I will have some spare parts and part out the rest. I will be converting my 98 DD to 4wd and lift it at the same time just as soon as I get the LJ out of the garage.

Everything bolts in/plugs in. Did it on a 97 and drove it around for 5 years with no problems.
