2wd to 4wd conversion

I know it's been asked alot I'm very new to this . I have a 99 2wd jeep cherokee can I convert it to a 4wd using a 99 jeep loredo? Please and thanks

I've gotten enough questions concerning AW4 specs and "will x year AW4 fit into x year XJ?" that I figure I should probably just write it all up once and for all... so here goes!

The AW4 transmission was used in 4.0L equipped XJs from 1987 through 2001. It was also rarely used in 2.5L equipped XJs with the automatic transmission option, 1987-1990*. It has 3 regular forward gears and 1 overdrive gear, along with a torque converter containing a lockup clutch. Gear selection is part hydraulic and part electronically controlled via solenoid valves. Well, i got tired of searching through this forum and reading "it's been discussed before", and never finding where it was discussed before...so here goes.

What you'll need:
Transmission/transfer case
Front/rear driveshafts
Front axle
Linkage and handle
Vacuum setup (depends)

Transmission/Transfer case:
These can be out of any year, to my knowledge. Obviously lower mileage is better. If you get a newer transfer case, you won't have to deal with the vacuum setup (mine came from a '98 and is vacuum-less). Crossmember is the same from 2wd to 4wd.

Thanks man I have the 4.0 Trans. Would I need to change the rear end both the donor and the one I'm converting looks identical

Rear end doesn't matter as far a 4wd is concerned, but you do need the correct 4wd rear driveshaft as the two rear end options have different length driveshafts. If they look the same, side by side than you should be good. The 8.25 is considerably larger than the d35.
