Will a 231 out of a XJ with a stick work on an XJ with an auto. And if so how much modification. 97 XJ has the stick and the 98 XJ has the auto.

yes, likely no modification at all (there are several different lengths of input gear shafts for 23 spline cases, which COULD be an issue, but I doubt it).
