2004 TJ Turn Indicator Issue

Electrical turn signal issue 2004 Wrangler

Passenger side directional does not function, steady on when activated, hazards work, driver side works fine. Also, braking activates panel lights. Did a small electrical install of strobes in the rear lights a few days ago, everything worked fine after install. Mounted switches on dash, otherwise no other drilling. Any ideas would be appreciated...sorry its not my XJ, but any help would be appreciated. Bad relay? ground? drilled into the wiring harness?:dunno:

If everything else works but the blinker I would say check the relay, they are fairly cheap and if that does not fix the problem just return it.

Check for a fault somewhere in the right side turn blinker circuit - it may be something as simple as a blown bulb, but I doubt it. Done any wiring mods recently near the fore or aft right-hand turn blinker?

The turn indicator and hazzards work on separate circuits usually, and hazzards a designed to work whenever you turn them on (while the turn indicator has some sort of "fault warning" inbuilt.)

I'd go over the wiring for the right-hand turn indicator again and make sure nothing there has been damaged. You've done some heavy lighting switch installs, as I recall, so I'm inclined to think you haven't done anything there. Also, the brake lamp switch is usually down by the top of the pedal, and there's not a lot of wiring in the dashboard for brake lamps, so that's something else that makes me want to think that it's a wiring fault (probably at the rear turn indicator...)

Oh - and I moved your post, since it more properly belongs in "Other Tech" (sorry, it's not an XJ, so it does require a certain shifting of mental gears to get things going... I'd give you more information, but the latest TJ FSM I have is a 1997...)

So, upon inspection of my friends Wrangler, a complete dissasembly of the dash and a few moments of utter confusion, it turns out that the single filament reverse light was in the brake/running light spot. So when it was operated it backfilled the running light circuits and tripped the relay for the other directional. It was odd though because it would do different things for no apparent reason, ie. solid on turn signal, or both blinking etc. I had a bad relay that did nearly the same thing a few months ago. anyway, thanks for the help, and sorry for the location of the post. (most importantly though, it wasn't my wiring at fault, and I let someone else replace the bulbs when we were finished witht he install yesterday).

Glad it worked out for you in the end - yes, something like that can cause trouble. And, it happens to all of us sooner or later - it's just not something I've seen often enough to think of, I usually spend my time tracking down wiring faults from other people's shonky work.

Don't worry about where it was - it's where it wants to be now, and it's recoverable, no? I was just happy I could offer some advice with the move notice...
