2001 XJ "power adders"

just don't leave the cover on it after you wash the engine.

I put a plastic bag around the one I used to have when I would wash the motor. Went inside to let everything dry one time and came back out in a hurry to run an errand. Shut the hood, jumped in and cranked it up, where it immediately shut back down. Opened the hood and the vacuum from my stroker's intake stroke had sucked that cone filter flat.

Swapped back to the stock air box with a quality paper filter and saw no real difference other than the lack of woosh noises.

Hmmm I used to run a K&N drop in filter (maybe thats my problem) with the stock airbox. Then I switched over to a K&N cone filter I got for cheap off a mustang. I felt a difference; do you have an aftermarket exhaust?
Mine is 2.5 all the way through (Ghetto fab)

beginning to end

stock box with premium paper filter
throttle body with ring bored out, and polished
2000 intake
mild ported head
4.7 stroker
stock manifold (APN after taxes)
stock downpipe (hopefully new one soon)
high flow cat
glasspack that needs to be replaced (hooker aeroflow after taxes hopefully)
stock tailpipe

I will not run another cone filter. I hydroed a motor a few years ago, the direct result of which was my stroker build. Shortly after switching back to the stock box, I went through the same hole that hyroed the motor with a cone filter, however I did it numerous times with the stock box with no ill effects. Went through it 3 times with the cone and that third time was the charm. 4k miles later... boom, clack clack clack clack clack.

Do I know for sure that had I not been running a cone filter the first time I would not have hydroed a motor, no. But it did not do it the second time with a stock box, which is enough for me. Eventually I will just run it into the cowl.

Now, it is worth noting that I may not have seen that much difference because I do not drive like a jackass all the time, I don't launch off the line like the fast and furious. Mid throttle acceleration is impressive enough. I don't every really got WOT, though I have not noticed a loss of power there the few times that I have. So ultimately it is not worth the added risk in the deep water.

Thats pretty much how I started with my Titan debacle. However, I don't think a stock air box would have helped me any[/QUOTE]

The Rusty's improved throttle response and off the line greatly for me on the stock engine. I don't do it all the time but when I do I don't want that sluggish feeling there. It wasn't just a little difference it was pretty much night and day.

Leave the stock airbox there, insulate it well and add a high flow filter. Exhaust get a nice mandrel bent 2.25in cat back, a high flow cat, dynomax or borla high flow, and a new down pipe bent to match. replace the header with an apn.

That just about sums it up except for the header. I'd just keep the stock unit on the '01 XJ and modify the downpipe (make it 2.5") downstream of where the dual outlets from the header join into a Y.
You can also have the taper at the bottom of the TB removed to improve throttle response, and swap a second electric fan in place of the clutch fan. Otherwise there aren't any other useful power mods you can do except build a stroker.

I'm going to change gears here instead of making a new thread.

I have the stock head unit and my front speakers wont work. They went out at the same time, and they are getting voltage and the resistance in the speaker is still good. What happened and how do I fix.

hmmm... blame this one on driver incompetency then. lol.

i was pricing a few headers around local shops last summer and a (reputable) shop had mentioned removing these lines. that not being something i wanted to mess with, and the shop charging an outrageous installation price, i never went anywhere with it. so that means either the guy was simply trying to get some dinero from me, or wasnt thinking a vehicle specific application. glad i asked, ill do some searching now. thanks a ton.

Wranglers you have to, as the AC compressor is below the intake manifold and PS pump.

I bought an intake system and Cat back. I went with AFE intake and Gibson exhaust. Got the intake installed and it sounds good at WOT. Haven't had it in long enough to see gains or losses. Exhaust should be here Monday, so I'll update.

When I install the exhaust, is there anything I should do with the Cat? I would love to chop it off and throw it out, but not sure how that would effect the computers and emissions. any suggestions?

buy a high flow cat from magnaflow. there is no performance reason to ditch the cat. The high flow will still filter the exhaust without hampering it.
