2 jeep build thread/blog.

Just looked it up (lowers are re radius arms) 37 3/4" sounds like upper/drag link/track bar may all fall in the same 38-39" range. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

drag link is going to be around 38".
lowers will be around 25", and upper will be somewhere between 23-27". Trackbar will try to get 38", but clearance issues may mean it gets a short as 31". Not stoked about the 38" drag link and 31" trackbar potentially, but I'm hoping to make it work at 38" so we will see. Upper and lowers are 1.25" hems, 2" .250 wall DOM, trackbar and steering are all 1.75" .250 wall DOM with 7/8" hiems.

Are you going to do the DL/TB like the Team Naxja heep?

i dont know what DL/TB is

I have a high steer arm on the pass side, so ill be going to pass side knuckle with the Drag link, and then trying to figure out what fits where for the trackbar.

Some info I found on pirate.
Let's do a long beam pure buckling max load for a 40" tube pinned at both ends.
1.5"x.120 wall ----> 22,820 lbs
1.75"x.120 wall ---> 37,520 lbs
1.5"x.250 wall ----> 36,470 lbs

Let's do it again for 32" tube:
1.5"x.120 wall ----> 35,650 lbs
1.75"x.120 wall ---> 58,630 lbs
1.5"x.250 wall ----> 56,980 lbs
In other words, my 1.75 .120 will be more than strong enough and is actually stronger than 1.5 .25 wall. My drag link is already made from 1.5 .25 so I'll keep that, but may build the upper and the trac bar from the 1.75 .120 wall I have 400' of.

hey I like the numbers, good call on that. plus the track bar shouldnt see any rock contact so I guess in that sense it should be fine as well.

Whats the deal with parting out your rig? Building something new?

Thinking of cutting down to one rig, between the cost of running 2, the time involved, and a few other things, it's gotten to be too much. If I can't get what I want for the jeep, or if the major components don't sell, it'll probably get put back together. Mostly just frustrated with it.

I know that feeling. For almost an entire year I was constantly building a willys, a built 2 door XJ, and my XJ. tons of time. Tons of money. sold off stuff, consolidated to one rig, and have been much happier, more free time (well sorta) one really built rig instead of 3 sorta kinda built rigs(sorta built I guess)
. I guess its the tradeoff, 2 sorta built rigs or 1 really built rig. I say if you keep it get rid of the welded front. thats one of your main issues. A welded front wreaks havoc on front steering for extended periods of time. Go open or lunchbox and call it good. consider the same for the rear. probably have alot less breakage.

I ran a welded front on a 79 scout on 35s and it was downright crappy, the only thing that helped was the hydro assist, but it still broke lots of stuff . Great traction for some situations, too much stress on all the front components for the other 95% of wheeling.

Not really xj related, but I'm finally ready to tackle the head gasket on m f250 diesel. Does anybody know of a good machine shop to get the heads decked in the Central Valley or Bay Area?

There is a place here in west sac that will do it all for around 150$. Mike1331 has used them multiple times. I plan on using them. Johns head shop or something like that.

Did you part out your rig ?

No, but I haven't touched it since Memorial Day. I was hit head on by a lady making a left turn about a month ago and fractured my sternum. Just finally feeling able to turn some wrenches. Took the wife's jeep out with her dad in his last weekend, just tooling around on some dirt roads near long barn. I need to tear into the super duty and get it fixed so she doesn't have to keep driving the wj to work. Once that's done I'll probably start on the xj chop, cage, and if I free up some cash 4link the rear.

Near long barn?

WOW.

We go up there alot.

Like 3no1 to trout creek and to the clavey. thats awesome man. I love that area.

Do you know any wheeling or good camping out there? we go to niagara rim to wheel sometimes and also have some good camping, but we are always looking for more ,and there isnt much wheeling that we know of.

Wow that sucks Zach. Glad you're ok. Hopefully you recover quick so you can get back to the fun stuff

The wheeling out that way isn't much more than dirt roads except for niagara rim. It was my father in laws first trip out and the first opportunity to shoot my sons new 10-22 take down that I bought him(not in to gun ranges). The national forests are the only place in ca that you're not made to feel like an outcast because you own guns and like to shoot them.

My brother in law finally uploaded the video of me getting denied by soup bowl Memorial Day. http://youtu.be/r7ldAS3kRBQ a little more clearance or a rock stacked under the passenger rear and I would of had it. Went to back up and try another line and broke the center pin on the passenger leaf, leading to leaves moving and bending my shock.

Finally had a free day to work on the jeep. Transfer case swapped out, new track bar mount welded in, rebuilt my front control arms with new bushings. Still need to remount my rear axle with some new ubolts, replace 2 shocks, and my winch solenoid. One day it will get caged, but at least it will be together for some snow wheeling.

Well, I think axle wrap must have been causing my rear driveshaft issues as the leaf spring perches are rounded. Started looking into new perches, u bolts and building a track bar and decided to do this instead.

Uppers are factory jk unlimited with only 3600 miles on them. I did an install for a guy of rubicon expresses new 4 link kit and I must say it was nice to work on a jeep without so much as a spec of dirt under it. Coils will either be stock xj fronts, jk fronts, or wj 4" rears depending on ride. The uppers look like they will work in the factory leaf mounts. It's sitting on its own weight with an xj spring in the picture. Lowers will be triangulated, but I need tube for those. Hoping to get the drivers side done tomorrow.

Are you going to use dom, or some chromoly tube? Poly performance has good prices on their chromoly
