2.8l

Hiya!

Welcome to the wonderful world of XJ's. :)

The good news is, you can find 4.10 geared axles for your Jeep pretty cheaply by looking for 4-cylinder equipped later models and snagging the whole thing for parts. (Most are rotted/blown and will be looking to offload.) The new gears will be just fine for 30x9.5's and towing a light load, and some light weekend wheeling.

Here's a great website with lots of info on XJ's in general, and neat stuff on 2.8's, and what can be done with them/replace them. http://www.lunghd.com/

Also, here are some places to check to make sure the Jeep is a good one. (If you already know them, please ignore the following...) Look for rust/cracks in the following places...

Rockers
Rear quarter panels (behind the wheels)
Driver's footwell
Passenger floor (all above the exhaust)
Rear hatch floor (around the tank)
Around the windshield
Rear roof pillars

The jeep may be a fun little toy to boot around, and then swap in a 4.3 V6 with the tranny, and t-case from a blazer. (Or a V8! :D )

Hope this helps!

:)

thank you for all of the replies.....

i do think a drivetrain swap is in its future but ill try to stay with 31s and 4.10s until then......

i eventually want an xj on 35s but i may have to do more work than planned or trade up if i stay with the 4x4 this time!

Hey Dude!
I own a 86 XJ, and it HAD a 2.8L. WHen my motor went bye bye, a mechanic friend told me horror stories, one right after another, giving the names of those he knew, and some I knew, who rebuilt the 2.8L...and some still blew after a few thousand miles. His point was, if you ever wanted an excuse, THIS IS IT :spin1: THats why I have a V8 in mine.
I wish you well with your your purchase. And plan well and have fun:cheers:
