we just picked up my girl a 85 xj with the famous 2.8l XD what would it take to swsap in a 77 360/727 combo??? i got a whole 77 power wagon sitting in my yard so if any 1 has done v8 swap please let me knw

shelbyluv has done a magnum swap in his 86 MJ.
Honestly though, as much work as it would be to do the swap you would be better off selling that and swapping in something else. If you want a V8, an LSx swap is easier.
A simple, plug n pray, swap would be a GM 3.4L. Using your existing manifolds and setup that is. Would not be very difficult to swap to EFI. A 4.0L/stroker swap would be good as well.

I have done the swap to an 86. My suggestion would be don't do it. Get an 87+ and swap a V8 in it. The radiator support and firewall areas are not easy to work around on the early rigs. A 3.4 swap is a much better choice for a 84-86 XJ. I'm not saying it can't be done. There are a few people who have swapped ChryCo V8s in early bodies. The lack of aftermarket support for the swap is a real buzz kill. You are on your own for wiring harnesses, motor mounts, radiator and exhaust manifolds.

As much as I hate saying it a LS or SBC swap is much easier and less time consuming.

We already told him all of this elsewhere and he was spectacularly unreceptive.

He wants to put a boatanchor carbed toilet of an engine into his XJ and no amount of logic or reason will overcome that. Either that or he is trolling.

Expect your advise to be ignored. At least it's just a turdpile 84-86 chassis he'll be wasting...
