i think i need a new ECU. anyone know of a place to test the ECU here in Socal?

also, if i was to get one from the Junk Yard, same year/engine/transmission, would i need to program it or can it be a plug and go? can it range in years? ex.1991-1994,5,6?

i would think as long as you get one from the same year XJ with the same options, it should be a plug and go. what makes you think the ECU is faulty?

91 to 95 should all be the same, options don't matter manual or auto trans doesn't matter.

I have one that I sold to David Bricker and still haven't gotten it to him. if you could convince him to part with it you can pick it up from me. try sending him a PM.

Well, the fuel pump relay needs to get a ground from the body. The ground coming from the wire harness is no bueno. Yeah it could be the wire itself, possibly shorted out along the way.....
The other issue is bucking and stalling at random times when I come to a stop and then when I try to leave it'll buck again like I don't know how to drive stick (this is an auto).
When I get hkme after a 3 mile run, put it in park and leave it running, it'll die.
I have spark and fuel pressure. Blue spark and whäever pSI te manual calls for.....

Replaced OEM CPS
Idle air
Good tps
New cat
New o2
New ignition components
Coil tested good
New pump
New filter
New injectors
New air filter
Clean TB
Sea foamed before smog

So now I'm thinking Computer.

Mike- I'll ask. Thanks

Clayton, have you checked the distributor? I once had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a bad distributor. Take the cap off and see if there is excessive play in the shaft.

The previous owner bought it and installed it.
Maybe he's off a tooth or two?
It starts. Rough idle then dies.
As far as I know, on a HO timing is not adjustable?
But even so, would a tooth or two cause it to stall at a stop or buck when taking off then stalling?

Let me add, I drove it yesterday for about a mile or two with stops and no signs of anything until I was about to et home. It bucked (misfire) at about 25 then at stop it shut off without a sign.
Notice, only when warm. Didn't want to start until 1 min of it sitting.

It's a drag the ECU didn't fix it. But, the good news is that you didn't have to buy one to find that out. There is a bit of a bright side, as least.

Happening only when warm would lead me to suspect a wiring connection someplace that is expanding. I know that's easy to say without knowing what it is,. Intermittents are a total pain.

Try breaking down the bulkhead connector (behind the fuse box) and cleaning it. To do so you disconnect the battery then remove the 1/4" bolt in the center of the connector from the engine-side. Once that bolt is unscrewed far enough the connector will come apart. Use a couple cans of contact cleaner and a wire brush to clear out as much of the old grease as you can. When it is clean let it dry, spread some new dielectric grease in, and close it up.
