Hey guys, I just bought a 1993 Jeep cherokee country with only 60k on it, yes i know i couldnt beleive it either. Anyways upon startup it claps or knocks if you will for a couple seconds and then goes away... Im not sure what it is but if i rev it up to about 2k you can hear it again.. pretty loud but not obnoxiously loud.. i dont know what the hell it is but i would like to know if its serious. The guy that owned it before me said it did that since he bought it at around 40k. Is there some engine oil additive that might quiet it down? It just has cheap shell oil in there now with a filter brand name WEB(i have never heard of it), but i just needed a quick lube as it needed a change. I can try and record the clapping sound if it helps. Thanks in advance for any help that you guys can give.

There was more i forgot to ask, this may just be a jeep thing but ill ask anyhow. When i hit a bump the rear end knocks like something has a little play in the suspension, i noticed my dads cherokee of the same year also does it.

In case you wanted to see how the jeep looks now. Still more to do.

Your engine might just be producing the normal sound of piston slap at cold start up. Another possibility is noisy lifters. Piston slap makes a soft ticking noise while noise from lifters sounds more metallic and clattery.
The engine is still young enough for you to try a good quality synthetic oil so I suggest you do that and change the oil filter to a good brand name unit (Mopar, Purolator).

I have had this type of noise on an old 87 of mine. It turned out to be loose bolts on the torque converter. It's an easy fix once you get under the truck.
The noise from the back could be a worn shock bushing, that's another one of my little annoyances that I have run into!

rear end knock is problaby worn out shock bushings. Might want to look into Bar Pin Eliminators if you're replacing shocks.

How hard is it to tighten the TC bolts? and where would i find them underneath the car? And yea the first i thought it was piston slap.. but then i didnt think piston slap continued on after the truck was started.. in the 2-3k rpm range. sound does sound like its comming right from the engine tho. The noise goes away after start, but like i said give it some gas it will come back, and not all the time.... I will try to get a recording asap. Thanks

I think what you're describing sounds like what the engine in my dad's XJ sounds like. It definately sounds (in his case) like the noise is coming from the front end. If I had to venture a guess on his, it is definately internal because putting 20~50 quieted it down a little bit but didn't eliminate it. Next guess is that it's probably crank related which means I'll swap in my spare engine into his rig.

Wait i have a 5sp so i dont have a TC... And jebus that is not what i wanted to hear... haha engine swap at 60k!, DOH..

Hmm this is interesting, cause my dad's jeep is also 5spd. Maybe the sound carries somehow? Is there anything mechanical that could be causing the noise which then resonates forward? Might have to pull the stethoscope out and listen again.
At 60K your engine should be fine... the one I'm dealing with is about 190K so that's why I didn't look too much into anything else.

You did not say it this happens only when the engines cold.
If only cold then normal pistion slap could be the cause.
If on every start the the converter bolts should be checked.

I beleive it has done it every time and it has been from about 35-65F so not too warm. Its a 5sp Btw.
