Transtar is a good company, we buy all of our rebuild kits from them. And yes, Raybestos parts are good.

joe is there anything i should watch out for when rebuilding the aw4?

CLEAN. Clean everything, and keep everything clean during reassembly. Other than that just follow the manual.

Do you have an ATSG manual, or factory service manual? You will need some "special" tools to do this. You'll need an arbor or press to unload the return springs so you can remove the snap rings in the clutch drums. Also make sure you have a rubber tipped air nozzle. Take lots of pictures. The Transtar kits are nice. Did you get steels with it? You may want to do that. Also consider a remanufactured torque converter.

The ATSG manuals are really good. Transtar sells them, or you can find them all over the internet.

I've got the AW4 one sitting right here. Definitely worth it, the factory manual is pretty good too. I used the factory manual for my Honda minivan transmission, it's still going strong 20k later.

I'll answer in order no on the manual yes to the arbor press and rubber tiped air nozzle, yes i did get the steels with it(and for $200 that was a steel right ) and i had already planed on getting a new torque converter

had alot off trouble getting this snap ring off, it took a combo of snap ring pliers, flat head screw drivers and needle nose pliers to get this one out

more parts in the cooler lol

after i power washed the case and the cart so they were clean. then i put down almost half a roll of paper towls

soaking the new clutch disks in tranny fluid for an hour just to be safe

starting to put it back together

the new steels

getting closer

replacing the plastic bushings

after this my camera decide that it wanted to go for a swim in the pan of tranny fluid that i was soaking the clutch disks in. luckily when i came in to eat (before the camera went swimming) i downloaded these picks off my camera. so ill try to get or borrow a camera before i finish it as right now all thats left is to pull the valve body apart and clean it and replace the gaskets, put the bellhouseing back on.
so how do you guys like it so far?

sorry i didn't get any pics of me putting the valve body back together or back on my hands where covered in tranny fluid, it took both of my hands to keep all the little balls and such in place. my buddy who i borrowed the camera from said "do not get any grease or oil on my camera"

bell houseing, 4wd adapter and tranny pan back on

nns cleaned and put back on

kick down cable, solenoid wiring, and speed sensor thingy back on

That looks way to easy. Why did you not replace the pump? Isn't that a must when you have a bunch of gunk inside your trans?
