1988 Cherokee MUFFLER HEAT SHIELD

I just purchased a seriously neglected XJ and I'm in the process of fixing it up. As I had to reinforce the passenger side floor and fiberglass it, I removed a make shift heat shield for the muffler. Does anyone know if it ever came with a stock one? If it did I'm off to the local junk yards. Thanks!

88' didn't come with a heat shield. Only the newer body styles did. Do a search for it and you should find a part number. Juice

Yes the heat shield was part of the Cat, not the muffler. An easy fix is to attach one of those air bake insulated cookie sheets to the underside of the floor above the cat or muffler.

Obviously, as the second owner of a 17 year old vehicle, I don't know if the muffler on my XJ is original - but, it definitely has a heat shield on the muffler (welded to it - definitely as an original part of the muffler).

It must be a Jeep thing. But I will rebut by saying that my 90, bought new, came with a shield on the MUFFLER and not the cat. So I guess it depends on the year or who was working on the shift in Toledo when the vehicle was assembled!
