would a 1986 xj with the v-6 have a dana 44??? I know that they stopped in 88.

Not likely. However, I have seen a referance to the 86 MJ having it. I have never heard of one beign found in a 86 XJ or a 86 MJ but there is a referance in one of my Parts/Manuals of a 86 D44.

D44s in XJs didn't start until '87.

The heavy-duty axle in 86 MJs wasn't a Dana 44, it was an AMC Model 20. This is confirmed by the factory service manual, and I have seen 86 MJs with the Model 20 axle. Haven't yet seen an '86 with a dana 44.
