Tried searching for this, but search kept omitting o2 b/c it was too short of a phrase.

jeep just took a quick dump in MPG. Spark plugs are new, throttle body was just cleaned, and I ran a can of BG44 through it a couple months ago, and there's no CEL.

Its got about 107K on the ticker, and from what I've read, a sudden drop in mpg is usually the o2 going out.

I'm going to give it another tank of gas just to make sure it wasn't a bad batch, but in the meantime, I want to have plan b figured out, which is replacing the o2.

since I have an 01, that means my 02 is way up front in my headers, right? There is not cat in the back. Are they a pain in the ass to change/access? Will I need heat? Would this be better left to a mechanic? If I take it to a mechanic, any idea on how much its gonna hurt my wallet? Is there a suggested brand to use?

I've also got a set of 784 injectors on the way, I'm thinking I should sort this mpg issue out BEFORE installing them?

IIRC, All of the '01 models came with the Cali emissions package, which means 4 oxygen sensors - 2 upstream of the header cats and 2 downstream. The 2 upstream ones control the fuel / air ratio and would be the ones causing the problem. (The 2 downstream ones just indicate the cats are working) There should still be a large cat in front of the muffler though.

They aren't terribly difficult to replace yourself if you remove the stock air box for access. Stick with the OEM sensors, NAPA should carry them.

do a search with o2*

If you are going to be changing them yourself, there is a special socket you can get a Sears just for O2 Sensors.

And I, for one, would deal with the Sensors prior to introducing a new variable to the system.
