Rogue fab tube bender

Let me start by saying i am posting this thread up for anyone that Is in the market for a new tube bender. This is my experience, as a rookie, novice, self taught builder. I have no ties to the said manufacturer of this product. I paid full price for it, didn't get any kick backs or free stuff. I just want to give other people, like myself, a chance to see how this product performs.

I recently purchased a Rogue fab tube bender to aid in the cage construction for my current build. This is my first real tube bender, and really my first attempt at building a roll cage. I have used a cheapo HF crush bender, in the past, to build a bumper and tire carrier, but this is a whole other animal.

I decided to go with their most affordable set up, the 1.75", 4.5" CLR, 180' bender/die set. I feel bad for the delivery guy that had to carry this to my door step, as this is a 100lb package deal in one box.

The bender comes unassembled and has to be welded together. The instructions were very simple to follow, and all the pieces really fit together quite well. The only item I had to go out and purchase was an air/hydro ram that I picked up from harbor freight for about $60 after all my discounts.

It took about 2 hours for me to assemble and weld everything together. I still have yet to paint it, but I wanted to make sure I knew how to operate it before I get it all painted up. I did find that the hitch pins they send with the kit have a VERY TIGHT fit. Only one of the pins really get pulled on a regular basis, so I just lubed the others and worked them in. Maybe a little clearancing in these locations would help them fit a little better.

The fully assembled unit is VERY heavy. I am tempted to mount some small casters under it to make it easier to move around the garage. If I had a tall shop, I would mount it to a mobile bench for sure. The unit seems to be very well balanced, it doesn't even budge with a 10' section of pipe hanging off the side of it, so I do t think it would have any issues sitting on a bench.

I did a handful of bends with it last night and will post those up in a bit...

So now comes the trial and error part...

First error... I should have purchased some cheap remnant tube to do some test bends. It's one thing to make one bend in a length, it's another thing to make multiple bends in a run, and have them land in their correct locations. I am slowly finding out where my bend apex location is in accordance with the bender, but don't have it down completely yet.

Here are some pics of my first few bends.

I have started off using WD40 to lube the die, but the tube seems to still be getting stuck in the die, so I plan to use a little oil on the die to see if that helps. I am bending 1.75", .120 wall DOM, so I know the tube isn't the issue.

I haven't done any bends greater than 60' yet, but so far they are coming out nice. I am having to give the tube a little tap to get it out of the die tho.

I will post up some more as I get used to this set up. So far, it's not taking to long to get used to. I will say one thing tho, it helps to have a second set of hands when using this.

Thanks for the info.
I had never heard of this Bender before tonight.

I'm running I need one with 1.5" dies.

disclaimer: I have no experience tube bending. done some rolling at a shop I worked at, but not anything to speak of.

everything I have read about bending says to lube the follower, not the die. not sure if that will help your situation though.

also, are you bending hrew or DOM? I have seen plenty of HREW that was not perfectly round.

just a .02

other than that, looks like a nice bender... I'm going to be in the market soon... might have to pick one up.

They do make a 6" CLR die set for the 1.75" tube. It's a bit more money, but I probably would have better luck with the tube not squishing down and getting stuck in the die.

I am bending 1.75", .120 wall DOM, so I don't think it's the tubes fault. I am going to try a different lube and lube the leader like you suggested rockclimber, hopefully that helps.

Looks good. Next time your in the area swing by and p/u my notch master unless you already have a notcher lined up.

Hope you got this cheap...
1) They originally advertised this as a mandrel bender, which doesnt say anything good about the people developing it. Nor does the box in the pic you posted.
2) Looks like a re-done tubeshark...
3)Propriatary dies
4)Propriatary dies limited in size by design.

SOOO MANY reasons to get a jd2/protools, I dunno why anyone would take their chances with this, unless its dirt cheap. Which it really isnt...

So this unit works a whole lot better when I keep the leader clean and lubed. I'm not having any issues using WD40, And is a whole lot easier to clean off the pipe than oil is.

This has pretty much eliminated the tube getting stuck in the die, and the bends are turning out much smoother.

Thanks for the tip rockclimber. Let me know when you're ready to use it.
