Boatsides

I ended up getting this heater:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-991102/

I have not installed it yet so I cant say for sure how well it works, but I found a ton of reviews on Pirate which all say its better than the more expensive Mojave heater. Supposedly on low it hot enough to roll down your windows.

I didnt have time this summer to install it, and I didnt think I would need a heater in Moab in the dead of summer. :laugh:Hopefully over Thanksgiving Ill throw it in and see how well it works.

Thanks for the info.

If I have to go that route I may end up copying you :D

Looking good, and I dig the heater bracket, but for dash brackets try Grainger next time. I picked up a bag of 50 of these for $13. I bought 1/4" x 20 but you can get different sizes.

Then I got back to work on the dash. I needed around 60 panel tabs to hold all of my dash panels on, and I orginally thought about buying them, but at almost $1.50 per tab, that was a lot more money than I wanted to spend, so I made them all myself. Cut, drilled and tapped a whole bunch of these little boogers.

Put most of them on, which isnt much to take pictures of, but those are some of the most time consuming things.

Well, a month later Im finally getting around to updating this thread. :anon:

I left off right when I was leaving from the Sierra Chapters SierraFest. We got to drive over a 8,700 foot pass with a moterhome+trailer and me driving a F350+trailer. Amazing views, but very stressful driving especially with people flying around the corners at you.
MattsPics217.jpg

Nothing like a warning to make you feel good about the drive you are about to make
MattsPics229.jpg

Amazing views
MattsPics221.jpg

We drove from California to Salt Lake City, Utah in one long day. Thought we would sleep in a Walmart parking lot, but after finding out that the Walmart in SLC is in a horrible neighborhood and envisioning our Jeeps getting stolen off of the trailers while we slept we decided to continue on down the road and finding a hotel. After being on the trail for a week, a shower and real bed felt mighty nice.

Monday we drove from just outside SLC south to Moab. We explored Moab, set up camp and figured out what we were going to do for the rest of the week.

Tuesday we set out for Fins N Things and Hells Revenge. Fins N Things was a good warm up, but hardly challenging for anything with two lockers and over 30'' tires.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge004.jpg

Friends who I went with. CJ7 locked/locked on 35s. Mike is an amazing driver who manages to do a ton of tough trails and still keep his Jeep in pristine condition unlike myself.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge036.jpg

Not many cool pictures of me, but I did get a chance to flex my junk out.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge139.jpg

FinsandThingsHellsRevenge142.jpg

Next up was Hells Revenge. I have seen some pretty crazy videos on Youtube of obsticals on this trails, so I was excited to see how I could do.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge160.jpg

Mike and Bruce in their CJ. I didnt realize that the trails were tire tracks up rocks, it was pretty cool to see strips of black traversing the rocks .
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge166.jpg

The rock in Moab is like sandpaper, you get traction on everything. Completely different than anything I have ever driven on.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge175.jpg

Mike tried this stupid little ledge. Once, backed up and tried another line. Backed up again for a different line. Third time it went SNAP.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge179.jpg

Alloy shafted AMC 20, we figured he had broken a pinion since you could turn the pinion over by hand with both tires on the ground.
Bruce on the ground trying to figure out what happened.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge180.jpg

It was interesting getting it off the trail with front 2wd only. A strap and a couple full throttle assults and we got them out.

We got back to camp, put it up on a trailer and pulled the dif cover to see what happened. Turns out they broke both rear shafts. We think they broke one earlier in the day, and this ledge took out the other one. We called around to see if anyone had spares, but no one did. They drove 1,000 miles only to have their trip ruined in the first day of wheeling. :(

On the way out I did get a shot of just how beautiful Moab is. For some reason I never pictured greenery being mixed in with the rock.
FinsandThingsHellsRevenge184.jpg

We had found a guy from Illinois with a LJ on 37s who tagged along with us on Tuesday, and we agreed to meet up again for the rest of the week since Mike and Bruce were taken out.

We agreed Poison Spider and Golden Spike would be our next trail.

On the drive to the trailhead we stopped to look at the Native American carvings on the walls.
PS-GoldenSpike003.jpg

Turns out Poison Spider wasnt much of a trail either. Fun, scenic, but not challenging.

PS-GoldenSpike096.jpg

Golden Spike is a fairly poorly marked trail, and if youre not careful you almost drive off a cliff.
PS-GoldenSpike148.jpg

At this point I was getting board, so I started finding the stupidest lines I could find, and I did them all with my front ARB unlocked.

The Crack! Ive seen pictures, heard stories, and got excited for this, only to drive over it with no tires lifted or fuss. Not what I was expecting.

You pop out of the trail and do a couple miles of fire roads that go up, down, up, down, up, more down, and more up. Thats a four lane road down there! Dont go to fast. On some of the flatter sections I did unleash my inner Jeepspeed, and it was a lot of fun.

After being disapointed with PS/Golden Spike, on Friday we went over to Metal Masher. One thing I found was that the trails in Moab are almost fire roads with a couple tougher rock sections mixed in. After coming from the Rubicon and other west coast trails it was almost nice to not worry about constantly hitting rocks with your difs .

Well, it turns out we cant read a map, got lost and did Metal Masher backwards. :sad1:

Started out on Widowmaker, and got denied to being hung up on my stock rear bumper and hitch.

The wall:

Please note the radius arms unloading when I give it gas. This was my first experience with them unloading, and it scared the hell out of me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfC4gIBaC-M

Being winched. I literally needed to be pulled 2'' so my rear tires could hit the wall. Sucked knowing I could have done it unassisted.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71lmhu8uI-4

We then drove the trail backwards again until we came to Rock Chucker, and I got a chance to drive down it. I had my seat sucked so far up my butt it took me awhile to remove it. Nothing like feeling both rear tires leave tera firma.

I figured I had to try and do it forwards, but failed. The guys I was with didnt really know how to spot, so I was on my own. I tried the left, middle and right lines, and just couldnt get it.

So on the two hard parts of this trail I got denied. :tears:

Saturday was our final day there, and we decided to go back to Hells Revenge.

I did Hells Gate with no trouble. Theres a video somewhere of it, but I cant find it right now. The videos on youtube make it look 10x harder than it really is.

Got to the hot tubes, and wanted to try Devils Hot Tub, but got talked out of it. Something about rolling backwards onto my roof...

So I tried Mickys Hot tub, and scared the hell out of myself. F&%$ing radius arms and unloading!:gonnablow

I sat there for a good five minutes roasting the tires trying to get them warm, but just couldnt get the front tires enough grip to get me out.

Needed the strap to get out.

After that we came across Escalator. Everything was going fine until, SNAP!

Broke a steering box bolt. :gonnablow
Third time I have had issues with my steering box. Luckily I was almost at the end of the trail, on the last day of our trip, so the breakage wasnt all that terrible but still annoying.

Trail took you on an overlook of Moab, and it made you realize it really is an oasis in the middle of nowhere.

Random picture, but this was home for our week in Moab, the couple of days at the Rubicon, and SierraFest.

We drove home on Sunday, and Monday morning I got to have all four of my wisdom teeth taken out. That knocked me out for a couple of days. :confused1

I had two weeks until my last trip of the summer to the Rubicon with a group of friends. I needed to fix my steering box, and ended up building a new bumper to hopefully fix my steering box issues once and for all.

Build thread:

Take some stuff off

Found some crushed, ripped unibody:shocked:

Just some of the unibody plating
Picture206.jpg

I boxed the framerails, and tied the outside to my front frame stiffeners

It took me a solid two weeks working on both my bumper and my friends CJ2A buggy thing that we were trying to get ready for our trip. I stayed up for 48 hours twice in a week and it finally caught up to me.
Picture245.jpg

Got everything done, minus hooking my winch up and headed for the trail a day later than planned. We planned to head up Friday night, wheel Saturday to Buck and wheel back out Sunday.

Ended up heading up Saturday night and wheeling into Soup Bowl and out Sunday.

Start of the trail

Getting that ledge first try!
45936_10150225381420234_748960233_14128329_8273579_n.jpg

And Soup. Last time I tried this (3ish years ago), it took a couple guys shaking my Jeep around to get it through. With the boatsides, I almost walked right up:yelclap:

Tried a stupid line and got stuck, even with the boatsides. Opps

And that ends my summers updates. Had a lot of fun, did a lot of wheeling, and did a little bit of work to the Jeep.

Next projects are:
-14 bolt
-231/300 doubler
-Hopefully 37s
-Finishing that blasted dash

One of these days I will just stop working on this thing. :bs:

Looks like you could use a suckdown winch... and yikes, that steering box keeps killing you! Carry spare bolts these days? :jester:

The new bumper should allow me to use the winch as a suckdown winch when I need it. Need to get it hooked up and something on the axle to winch from first.

I now carry a couple different spare bolts, longer, shorter and a lot of washers. Im also thinking about picking up a spare box to throw in just in case, but Im hoping the added reinforcement will stop my steering issues.

No...seriously...or you'll end up like me :D

the hole you were wondering about is from core drilling, and next time your out in moab i'll have to show you how easy an XJ does rockchucker, the have the perfect wheelbase for it.

Next time I am out in Moab I would love to go with some locals. I wish I had some other people to wheel with, spotters or anyone who knew the trails.

Hey Matt, I'm gonna guess your headed home this break?
I got done with my last finals today, heading home Sunday. You got any more finals this week? Working on your "Jeep" at all?
