How much slop is too much in steering gear? (Dead spot)

I've settled in at about 2.5" of lift on my '95 XJ. I'm running a stock steering setup except for a Black Diamond adjustable track bar. Toe is about 0.25 degrees in, caster is about +6.5 degrees (adjustable LCAs). All ball joints and TREs have been recently replaced, as well as the steering...

FS: Roof Rack (Olympic TopHat Top Hat) in NM

For sale is my Olympic Top Hat roof rack. I've had it on the jeep for a few years and loved it, but I just got a TailBone for my spare tire and have decided I'd rather go for a lower profile. It has plenty of room for a spare and camping gear. I added an absolutely ugly wind shield for the...

    WTB: Factory luggage rack cross-bars

I pitched mine a few years ago when I put on my gutter-mount rack, but now I'm switching back. I would be interested in buying a pair for my '95 if the price is right (shipped to residential address in 87544). Thanks! fiz

Stupid question: how to remove rear driveshaft....

....without hemorrhaging transfer case fluid in my '95? I'm assuming that if I have to pull the rear shaft on the trail I'm going to dump a lot of T/C fluid. I have about 3" of lift on it with no vibe issues, so I haven't looked into an SYE. Is an SYE the only answer here? Thanks, fiz

    5 (five) Big 0 (Big0) Mesa A/P p235/75r15 tires

I put on a lift and 31, so here are the old tires. Only 15k miles on them. I never had any issues on or off the road with them; they were a great tire for the money. The spare was rotated in, so all 5 tires have 7-8/32nds of tread left. They are "Big O" brand Mesa A/Ps: P235/75r15 "105S"...

    Serpentine belt noise from rear.

Yep, I've had a very occasional squeal coming from the rear axle area (location confirmed by several passengers) for a few weeks. I assumed wheel bearings and am going to replace them anyway when I finish breaking in my new gears. Yesterday, however, I noticed that the squeal stopped when I...

    Would I notice gear whine?

Hi, I just finished setting up used 4.1x gears in my D30/35. The pattern looked picture-perfect (coast+drive) in the front, but I wasn't able to get it so nice in the back. It's well centered and spread out on the drive side, but it looks a bit shallow on the coast side. I thought that was...

    Editing thread title

Hi, I was wondering; is it possible to edit a thread's title? I didn't see a way to do that, but it would be very useful in the Bargains & Deals forums. I.e., one could edit the title to reflect "sold" or "found" in the WTS/WTB sections. That would make it a lot easier for people searching...

WTB: d35 4.11 gears in good working order

Yep, that says it. :D Thanks, [email protected]

    Worth swapping non c-clip d35 in for c-clip d35

I came across (free) an older non c-clip d35, and I'm about to put 4.10s in my c-clip d35. The non-c is in worse shape, would probably need brakes refurbished, etc. OTOH, it would be easier to set up the gears on the bench than under the Jeep (which is what I would do if I left the c-clip axle...

My D30 had no pinon depth shims...?

Hi Folks, I'm regearing my D30 and see that I had no pinion depth shims originally. From the pinion, it was slinger, inner bearing, inner race, baffle, diff case. No shimming at all inside the case. I did have preload shims on the outside part of the pinion. Is this odd? Thanks, Ben

Dana 30 Carrier question: do I have the right one for 4.10s?

Ok, you could argue this goes in OEM Tech, but how many XJs shipped with 4.10 D30s? I was already to regear the front from 3.55->4.10, but it turns out the 4.10 carrier I had was junk (side gear washer thrashed the inside). Casting number on my 3.55 was C32932. Casting on the junk 4.10...

Front wheel wiggles - hub replacement, right?

Hi, I'm trying to track down slop in my front end, and I think I've found the culprit. On both front wheels, if I grab the top and bottom (while the axle is jacked up), I can wiggle the wheel back and forth slightly, hearing a clunk when I do. The ball joints aren't giving (the knuckle...

Wobble question: is it my LCAs?

I'm trying to track down a slight wobble in the front end over 55 MPH. I just installed a 3" OME lift, and the wobble got much worse. After zeroing toe and centering the axle with an adjustable trackbar, I was back to the original wobble. I just got new tires (31x10.5R15 BFG T/A KOs), and the...

Old Man Emu kits - no search results?

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been discussed, but I couldn't find any results for "ome" or "emu" in any post in any forum. I'm looking for a lift that will let me run 31" tires, and I'm looking at the following right now: RE 3.5" super-ride with full leaf packs RE 3.5" super-flex with full leaf...

    Slide & Tilt front seats?

Hi folks, I would like to be able to make my front seats slide and/or tilt forward to give the option of a little more (sleeping) room in the back when I'm not driving. Do the 2-door front seats have more flexibility than the 4-door? Or are there other options? Thanks! fiz

    Heater Water Valve P/N?

Hi folks, While using a breaker bar on my oil filter (no kidding...it must have been put on with an impact wrench before I bought the car), I broke the water valve. I believe that is the proper term (based on an oblique reference in the FSM). It is the vacuum-actuated valve with 2 water...

    Just installed Remote Starter

For Christmas, my folks got me a remote starter for the '95 XJ. It's the Valiant (IC Dynamics) RS108 from JC whitney. It does include the relays needed for the positive pulse power locks. It took several hours start to finish, including tracking down all the wires and making a trip to...

    242 WJ compatibility?

Hi folks, Would a 242 from a WJ be a direct swap for a 231 from a '95 XJ? Is there a reference for the different cases in different jeeps? Thanks, fiz

    Replacing exhaust components...

Hi folks, I was servicing the drivetrain on my '95 a couple weeks ago when I noticed that the single pipe coming off the exhaust header was mangled. It has a huge dent in it that must restrict the airflow by 30% or more. Assuming everything is stock, what's the easiest/cheapest way to replace...
