Let me walk you through the process for purchasing a gun in Indiana.
Pay for gun, wait for store to do background check if you don't have a carry permit (usually about 15 minutes and free, good time to look around for next purchase), then once it clears, you walk out with your gun. That is it. The only time you have to pay a fee to have a weapon is if you are wanting an full auto gun. Then it is 200 dollars for the permit.
For transporting any fire arm in Indiana without a permit, just have the ammunition up front and the gun in back unloaded and locked in case. If you have a carry permit, you can get a fire arm with no waiting for background check as it was already done.
Real quick... YOUR LAST SENTENCE IS 100% INCORRECT. some other details to follow.
-Store does National Instant Background check (NICs Check) no matter what. This is the yes, no, or hold. A hold is not an exact amount of time. It could be a few hours or even a few days.
-Indiana issues a LICENSE because it's your right to carry. They are not PERMITting you to carry. You are born with the RIGHT and you can lose the RIGHT.
-ZERO, NO, NONE, 0, License To Carry a Handgun (LTCH) is required to make a handgun or long gun purchase. You have the right to transport the tape/stapled package to your home or place of business. Nowhere in the NICS check is a LTCH required or beneficial. Having a LTCH will only bring a little peace of mind to the store owner/employee.
-DO NOT transport a firearm unless you are taking it to a gunsmith, or gun store. Many Police officers are nice about this and will tell you keeping them separated is okay.... it is not okay. I am glad there are nice LEO's but that does not guarantee you will get an officer who does it all by the book... If you do need a gunsmith (place of repair) or gun shop then put the handgun out of reach and you have ZERO reason to need any ammo. I think there is some interstate travel law, but I haven't looked into it.
