I drive a 96 Grand Cherokee V6.. Completely stock. Well, unless you count the removable tow hitch and strap.. I don't. You can. But.. Yea, it's all stock. Well, the rims and tires came from a Cherokee.. But again, not a major modification. haha. Anyway, a few weeks ago my right rear brake and reverse lights go out. Not thinking it was a big deal (they do come in sets of two, ya know) I left it. Yesterday I finally replace them as well as every other bulb on the Jeep's backside. Now, (today), inside the cab there's the diagnostic display and it won't stop flashing that I have a tail light out. Yesterday this lil thing wasn't flashing at me.

Why did it turn back on saying my tail lights are out? Yes, I did check. No, they actually aren't. What can I do to fix this?

make sure the marker bulbs on the sides of the rear lenses are working and make sure all of the third brake lamps are working and all sockets must have the correct bulb. i believe the third brake lamp bulbs are 922's. determine if it comes on when hitting the brakes or turning the lights on to help isolate where the problem lies

It is probably a resistance issue. Pull the bulbs, make sure the sockets are clean, and the correct bulbs are used, and a little dielectric grease in the sockets wouldn't hurt.

You can also pull the positive and negative cables from the battery and hold them together for 30 seconds to see if that clears things.

replace the third brake light bulbs.
