your trailer opinions

what about putting springs on a trailer like that? I'd think that if you had a stable frame with no issues putting a set of leaves on wouldn't be impossible? I'm ignorant to this so feel free to correct me.

It's not, I just suck at copy and pasting on the internet.

Doug - find yourself a trailer?

nope, every one i looked at was junk, im gonna stockpile some $$$ and have one built to my specs, theres a dealer here that will custom build at extremely reasonable prices, plust i know it will be free of bootyfab ;)

Hey Doug if you dont care to give up your trailer dealer secrets I would love to know what place that is. I need to get my own trailer soon so I can stop using one my jeep isnt to fat for!

same place matt got his, smokey mountain motors quoted me a little over 2k out the door for an 18ft wood deck dovetail with ramps, brakes and breakaway system... kicker is they will pretty much build whatever you want with features (aka toolbox in the tongue frame, drive over fenders etc etc) they do financing through most major banks too

have you checked out any Gator Trailers?

i found them on Ebay when i was looking to get myself a trailer.

you can also check out their own website:

here's the one i got:

18ft, flat deck (no dovetail), stand up ramps (same price as slide in's, but much stouter)

the flat deck helps with entry and exit on my steep driveway... and there's no wasted space, as i've had vehicles butted up to the ramps, without them sloping down a dovetail.

an 18ft'r makes for a long rig though...

...and as any new trailer should, it tows great too!

make sure you get one with stake pockets though... they come in handy. i used mine to setup an "A" frame sorta deal... made great shade during the July heat at the Crawl this year.

by the way... walked out with my new trailer for under $2k with a new spare, and some stupid $120 credit card usage fee (hint: take cash!)

what kind of weight ratings do you guys have on these trailers? also, on the tandem axles, is it good to have both axles brake or is just 1 braking axle ok?

Alright, not hijacking your thread Doug but this question pertains. But what do kind of trailers do you all like. I'm going to the trailer place tom to look at some and I'm not sure what I want. I know steel deck and pull out ramps and brakes and stuff but I'm not sure of the size and dovetail or flat. They have some 18' right now with dovetails and I might look into those or I might have one custom made with drive over fenders and 16'. If I get one without drive over fenders I(Matt) :) will have to help me make them stronger cause me jeep is to wide to fit through them and I don't know if I want the dovetail, its easier to get on and you can do it without ramps but theres a chance of it dragging the ground. So what do you all think?

Doug there's a trailer on my street for sale. Might want to take a look at it. It seems to be big enough to handle car hauling from what I can see. May need a touch of work. It's on Rising Rd, turn right off of Rosewood off of Rutelidge. About a mile to a mile and a half off Rutelidge Pike past the U Pull it.

i braking axle is fine, two can get really touchy plus your truck should have the built in brake controller so it will be worlds smoother than using a separate brake system... i think the dovetail i looked at was like an 7500 or an 8k trailer?

just have them build them it doesn't cost that much extra, and its a pretty common thing for them to build, if you only plan on hauking the jeep dont get the dovetail, itll drag a lot of places and is really for getting a car on it (breakover angle) i talked to them about building me 16 footer and the price difference is only 2 or 300$ i think what im gonna end up with is an 18ft wood deck dovetail though, i wanna be able to haul more than the jeep on it ;)

Yeah I couldn't tell what was up with it. I just passed it yesterday when I was leaving and thought I'd tell ya. Well it was a try!

I have only drug my dove a handfull of times. It does make it nice though when the rear is short enough to not need ramps everytime you load and unload. another thing to think of is that you aren't buying this to carry only the Jeep. you will have friends and family that'll need help from time to time and then it's nice to not have to worry about breakover angle to load.

i load my jeep without ramps and my trailor is not a dove tail(although i do have ramps for times when my 4wd doesnt work or have to load a car)

i would get the dovetail. i wish mine was a dove tail....

both axles on mine are braking axles.... deff worth it. dont even know its back there when having to brake hard....
