but I was curious as to if anyone has taken the XJ front suspensions and out it under the Liberty. Everyone hates the liberty cause of the IFS, so why not change it out for a long arm lift. I may be going to Iraq and am considering selling the TJ and getting a liberty and then doing the straight axle up front. I have a donor Axle already. I want to run some 35's or 36's on it. I figure I can do all this while still driving my XJ. Go ahead and shoot me now but someone show me some positive/negative feedback rather than just slam me.

Hey I thing the Libbys are kinda cute :gag: My biggest concern would be structural integrity of the body. Haven't crawled under one to look. I guess my problem with it is that around here we beat the crap out of our rigs. I can't justify a 96 because it won't last. I would hate to tear one up before I got it paid for. With the right use of a sawzall and some tubing I think you could make a nice looking rig.

Was that a Freudian slip "out it"???

They did that, except they used better gear than XJ gear.

Not a bad set up, but it's still a cute ute.

They also said that they went to the original 4wheeler business (Trailready) that did the front axle conversion on the Libby (the first, and only, as far as 4WPW knew), and asked if they would do the conversion on their (4WPW's) rig. Trailready said that the conversion was so difficult "that they never wanted to build another one." 4WPW finally went to a company by the name of S&N Fab to do the conversion.
 
If you really want a project/money pit, why not a musclecar ground up restoration?

What do you plan to use as a DD while the Libby is on jackstands?

Things to think about.

My dad is tryin to find a challenger. As for me I have a Cherokee and a TJ and my wife just got a new Scion. Around here we only have sand and some mud(Eastern NC). I guess I would like to do it just to be different. Kindda sounds discouraging, but then again half the fun is in the challenge to make it work. Yeah I guess it is a cute ute but it would be pretty sweet on 36's and have a big ol winch on the front.
 
Reading the article again, it seems that the major problem is that the Libby has rack-and-pinion steering, which they said isn't adaptable to the solid axle. So, figuring out and installing the new steering system seems to be the major problem.
 
After turning a 1 ton Chev. (Van cab) motor home into a 4X flat bed, putting an El Camino body/motor on a M-715 frame and running gear. And putting a CJ-10 bucket/M-715 PU bed, on a 3/4 ton W-200 chassis (with a 360 hypo), I´d be the last to flame anybody.

The CJ-10 was even more fun, the only bill of sale or closest thing to a registration we had, was a receipt for 12 tons of scrape metal, we bought from the military. :dunno:
Niether of our creations would fit on the trailer, without changing all the tires. Creative urges and praticality sometimes conflict. :doh:
 
Look on Rustys offroad web page, I believe that they fit 35s on the KJ and did the conversion with a 4-5 inch lift...

along the same lines...1970 plymouth gtx (the roadrunner with all the extras!)

as for the libby conversion...? it would look oh so much better with some "shoes" and steel extras. why no just copy something along the lines of the ford ifs lift kits? i dont know about how different they actually are, but seems like they would be more like the same kind of animal than putting in solid axel...?

You're just an artist working in metal structure. I wish I had the space and huevos to build up something like that. We used to build up the old farm trucks. Had a '20s IH flatbed that we used to cruise small town center street in, complete with commode and claw-foot bathtub. Someone, somewhere has a movie of me in the bathtub with my bare arms and legs hanging out cruising up the canyon. But that's another story. :jester:
 
I fill up the garage with junk, sometimes for years, get a fit of creativity and see, what comes together. Most always works, though sometimes not well. Can say one thing though, my junk (often ugly) usually holds together, even after some serious abuse.
Was playing with an old Uni Mog, a few years ago, mostly out of curiosity, wanted to see what made it tick. Grandma across the street, did nothing but complain, called the police, complaining about the paint smell (carburator cleaner). Took out the roller and a bucket of hot pink paint, painted that sucker up, like a circus wagon and parked it in front of her house for a year and a half. :laugh2:
Surprised, the majority of the natives (Germans), put up with my eccentric ways.
