yosemite wheeling?

I have alot of family that lives up there by bass lake, oakhurst and coarsegold. I go pretty regularly and Ive never found anything super close. Ive been wanting to go to Dusy Ershim, but its not that close to yosemite

There is an easy route that goes goes into the park. There was a thread about it from two or three years ago. 2wd suv should be fine.

You can take Chowchilla Mountain Road up there and it drops you into the park right at Wawona. Fun snow run, but it's basically just a fire road when you drive it in the dirt. Not really much else IN the park, but there are a whole bunch of trails in the surrounding area just outside the park boundaries. Nothing really challenging though, just scenic.

With the Sierra Chapter over 10 years old now, it might have been covered. I always have thought that a quick search to bring up a dead thread is better then starting a new one.

Starts off of Highway 49, south of where 49 intersects Highway 140 in Mariposa. There's a few different ways to access it between roughly Bootjack and Ahwahnee. Best bet is to look it up on Google Maps (Chowchilla Mountain Road, Mariposa, CA) and print out a map. It changes directions a few times before you actually get into the park boundaries and it would be real easy to end up on the wrong road if you weren't paying attention.

Keep in mind when/if you do, this road drops you into the park without passing through a ranger station/fee collection booth. If you exit the park via one of the main roads (140, 120, or 41) they may stop you and ask to see your receipt on the way out at which time you will have to pay the $20 entrance fee, unless you're an annual pass holder of course.
I'm an annual pass holder, and I've found that whether or not they check seems to depend on how much traffic is passing through the exit. If its slow, they'll usually stop you at the stop sign. If its busy, typically they'll just wave everyone through without stopping.
Another interesting way in/out is via Foresta Road. It starts in Foresta off of Hwy 140 before you enter the park and drops you off on Hwy 120 inside the park. A buddy and I took it out of the park as it looked like a good shortcut to get from our trailhead back onto 140. It passed by a couple of cool waterfalls and over a small bridge. Unfortunately for us, the road had deteriorated in a few places and there was a lot of overgrown brush on the shoulder as well. Fortunately we were travelling downhill through the rougher patches... I don't think my buddy's Saturn sedan was ever the same. :eyes:
