XJ with Police Package

Hey all. I'm new to this forum. Not new to Jeepin' though. I've got a 97 TJ at the moment, which brings me to why I registered and am posting here. While I'm loyal to my TJ, the wifey is now pregnant and we need a bit more hauling space then what either my TJ, or her Ford Ranger can provide. So I'm trying to convince her that we need to go with an XJ. Basically we need something that she and I can ride in AND take the baby AND her three (freakin' big) dogs. The XJ will satisfy that requirement. What I WANT to get is an XJ that was manufactured with the police package for the beefier suspension and electrical system. You might be thinking, 'is it going offroad? Is that the reason for the police package?' Actually, no, it's not. The wife would KILL me if I tried to take the 'family car' offroad. I'm looking for the police package because I'm a volunteer EMT and our jurisdiction does allow us to respond from home provided we have lights and siren equipped. I'd LOVE to have that already installed, but if not, I'd still really like the police package.

Which FINALLY (GEEZ, does he ever shut up?) brings me to my question. Anyone know where I can start LOOKING for a used police / rescue Jeep? It probably won't be for another couple of months before I buy one, but I would like to start looking now to find out what's out there and about how much I'm gonna have to pay for one. Provided I can actually find one I really like.

I bought mine from the State of Arizona at an auction, It was a highway patrol vehicle. Look online at your state or local government's web site for anything concerning surplus property. Sometimes its a little hard to find so in that case just keep calling numbers for retaled areas and eventually someone will transfer you to the right area. If purchased directly from the aution it is usually for a real good price.

Ditto. Check out Police auctions. The Colorado State Patrol is still using some XJ's and I'd imagine they're phasing them out since they're getting to be 4+ years old now.

Good luck!

Tennessee State Parks is getting rid of a bunch of xj's. Thats all we drove for years. Check with Dept of motor vehicles in Nashville Tn. for sell dates and places.

Cool. I'll see if Ohio has any surplus auction links since that's where I live. Michigan might also be doable. It's not TOO far of a drive and I figure they're gonna have some good ones too since I know they are the ones that tested the Cherokee police package to begin with.

[Based on 30 years in law enforcement] I have never known of decommissioned police vehicles 'crossing the public sales block' with emergency lights and sirens still installed. (Be curious to know what State authorizes use of a siren on an EMT's or volunteer fireman's private vehicle?)

to answer you question. Tennessee, i know for a fact, allows the use of a siren and lights on a volunteer firefighter, EMT or rescue's personal vehicle. they aren't allowed to use blue lights but can use red lights, strobes and sirens. i have a lot of friends that have them on their personal vehicles, thats the only reason i know

yup. were allowed to have them here too. ive got several friends that are volunteer firemen. they all have red lights and strobes and sirens.

Check your local DNR offices/website out. Lots of XJ's are used from state-to-state in Parks/DNR departments.

In Indiana...volunteer firemen can have a Blue light on their vehicle....but they aren't supposed to break any laws while responding...like speeding, running red-lights..etc. I'm pretty sure that they are NOT allowed to have a siren...but I could be mistaken on that. I've never personally seen a volunteer fireman, EMS, or otherwise with a siren in Indiana.

Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island... the list goes on. The problem is that different states use different colors to mean different things, and some states don't honor other state's permits.

For example, in MA, Police are allowed to use blue in the direction of travel and blue and red on the other end of the car (aka the rear). Fire is reversed-- red up front and blue and red in back. You have to have a permit authorized by the chief of your department to use them in your personal vehicle.

Connecticut is the reverse for coloring -- police use reds, firemen use blues. NY state is the same way. The difference btwn Connecticut and New York is that NY state will allow a Massachusetts red/blue-light permit holder to pass through NY without any problems. Connecticut, on the other hand, will pull you over and ticket you on the spot for having lights mounted illegally, even if you never turn them on.

I go to a lot of police auctions and impounded vehicle auctions, there are a lot of deals there, often there are xj's so that would be where to find them. If you have never been to an an auction before you need to go prepared as everything happens so fast and you have really little time to go over the cars. I have also seen the police package on some non-police vehicles like Parks & Rec. Department, Water Dept. The local Fish & Game Warden has a Cherokee w/ full lights, siren, and is on the beach and bridges alot checking for fish licenses. At the auctions the lights are removed but still the wiring is there for them and the cool spotlight thing is kept. I have seen some hwy. patrol motorcycles & police dual sport dirtbikes w/ the lights still attached. Also the lights are not thrown out here, they are sold sepearately b/c tow truck operators from Mexico use them (w/ police red and blue colors) and I think it would be legal to use the lights if they were swiched to amber or your job allows you to do so. Amber lights such as those from the Water Depts. are kept on the vehicles. These auctions are handled by a third party auctioneering company that sells for the departments and tow yards in your area. You need to find out who they are, perhaps search google for police auctions in your area. Nationwide (www.nationwideauction.com) is one of these companies.
