XJ metal fender flairs, anyone?

Something will bend, if not the flair then the whole side will cave in.

Does that logic apply to rocker rails too? You're a damned genius! :sunshine:

Do a search for Bortons old XJ. He had some metal tube fenders built in at the end of his rigs run.

I found this pic

Alright, just one more, I always will LOVE this rig...

There are a few of them on XJDB.com, search Borton...OR, you could order a set of metal TJ flares from POISON SPIDER and put them on as your tj flares were...although you may have to work on those as they wont flex with the lines like the plastic ones do.

I like the idea... If it went bumper to bumper it'd have to flex or it would break, wouldn't it.

If you could make a bolt on tube, the right bends, that would attach to a mounting point near the front bumper mounts and then mount behind the LCA mount on the uni-body. You could put some plate on the area over the fender well, you'd have rock'n armor which protect from rubs AND would act as flares.

Have you looked at C-ROKs exo skeleton? PARTS of that might work.

Now imagine no flares, the tube in a bit closer and skinned from the top slanted part of the fender down to the tube. That's basically what I have in mind. But when I'm done you'll be able to remove the fender and "flare" as one whole assembly. For the rear it will have to be permanent of course. Sucks because I've got all the materials laying around, some of the tube bent up but haven't had time to touch it!

AJ -- how's this project coming? Any pics available?

I'm in the very first stages of a full width 44/9" swap (meaning I'm gathering parts..) and I plan on running removable fender extensions. What I'm thinking is trailer fenders, narrowed to whatever width I need, with a 90 degree tab at the front and rear lower inboard flange of the piece, and a threaded stud at the top center. The tabs will slide into slots cut into the existing fender, in and down. Then the extension will "hinge" on those tabs as I rotate the top inwards to where the stud will pass through the fender with a wingnut on the inside. I hope that made at least a little sense. Something like this, but minus the crappiness of the drawing.

You know what I'd like to see is basically a steel reinforcement strip, shaped to match the curve of the well or a cutout well, and it would bolt to the stock/oem flare mounting hardware. It could have a single or a couple small braces that could attach the oem hardware to the well by self taps. It could even swing down and attach to an aftermarket bumper or wrap underneath on the back side to the unibody. Would be way easy on the back. Front would be tricky but pretty easily doable.

Even some reinforcement like that would provide extra strength to the fender so it would take more than a little push on the edge of the cutout to deform it. It wouldn't provide a flare for those that need it for legalities but it would provide some strength for cutout or even stock fenders that are flareless.

Thoughts, comments?? AJ? Brian at JCR??

What I was thinking of try was runnignthe tubes right next to the fenders, similar to Borton's then making some kind of connection/brace plate to the unibody rails. Give them a bit more strength, have to find some way to make them removeable though, pins or just through bolts maybe.

Theres way too much labor involved to produce a hi-quality steel flare at a
cost people wont complain about for XJs....
Also, without some type of 'full wrap' & welded in...you'll never keep them on
your rig....(my 2 cents atleast)

So...here yea go, fab away.....I wont be pursuing beyond this one, only on
a custom, rig in my shop, basis..

The fenders are in such bad shape on this XJ, I had to cover them up with
D plate.....let it be finshed before yea harp on it please.

Detour -- those look awesome. They're the best looking ones I've seen yet. They're pretty similar to what I've considered doing, except I hadn't planned on using the treadplate or having them wrap over the headlights and around the grille. For support, I figured on bolting or welding them into the unibody in the fender well and tieing them to the rock slider, as it appears you did as well. Good job!

Thankyou.
It'll be hard to find success without wrapping in my eyes, these are tied
with multible thruout the nose, inner fender wells, and at their base. I'm
pretty confident anything less your going to be picking up on the trail.

I've been tinkering with this since Wed., it needs to be in primer by the end
of the day, buttoning up wiring & sanding this am along with final tie-ins. I
use D plate alot cuzz it shows up well in pictures......along with everything
else in this world, your going to like it or hate it.

ok wow:confused1 :confused1 those were pretty much the flares I've been looking for and someone finally up and made 'em. As you mentioned though...I wonder how hard it would be to put on TJ flat fenders to an XJ? Never thought it was possible before, but maybe?

found these while surfing other forums...

the idea looks good but they seem to be made a bit rough

That's kinda what I was thinking about but with support tubes going to the inner fender with a brace going across the engine to the other side. so basically you won't see the braces.

Any more info on these? Do you have the link to where you found them?
