XJ Axle conversion

Also wondering how hard would it be to go to portal axles (that is what they run on H1's and Mogs isn't it?) thinking that would clean up the belly and add some clearance.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again

H1's have portal boxes that some people like to attach to their ford 9"s and other axles, so they can be set up the same way as MOGs or Volvos...

The main draw back to running portals is the expense involved with making them fit and work right...

First off I wouldn't run volvos for two reasons. One, I don't think they're that strong and two, they are nearly impossible too find parts for. Although they are lighter and smaller than mogs...I think they are ok up to about a 37" tire. A set of hybrid portals like mog 9's or portal-teks are going to run you about 8 to 10 grand, but are going to be the easiest route to go. Check out www.portal-tek.com. Eithe taradon or exact makes the mog 9's and they're a badass setup too. As far as the the hummer portals I think they're reverse rotation aren't they?

I've got a set of mogs waiting to go under my cherokee right now but haven't had the time to work on them yet. I've got 404's but would rather have 416's. You have to have the mogs narrowed (just shorten the driver's side) in order to offset the pinion in the front enough to clear the oil pan, or atleast have it moved over if you don't want to have them narrowed. I may still have to limit up-travel to a few inches and run a reasonable lift just because of the size of the diffs. You will also have to have a pinion conversion done, and I bought a disk brake kit for mine in order to run a standard bolt pattern. You're also going to have to lengthen your wheel base about 18" as a result of the extremely long pinions. The axles will also require you to run a linked suspension in the front and the rear inorder to get rid of axle wrap. Be prepared to reinforce your chassis to because the mogs are really heavy and introduce alot of torsional stresses into the chassis. Another possible draw back to the mogs are the 7.56:1 gear ratio...so forget about the highway.

The portals are going to give you awesome ground clearance though, and when compared to building a set of one ton axles with lockers that will hold up to the abuse the mogs will...I don't think they are that bad of a deal.

Yeah...the hot thing to do there is run a standard 9" center section upside down. Sorta like a Hi-9 but it spins the other way, and is reversed at the portals.

If you did that wouldn't you be runnning on the "coast" or back side of the gears, and wouldn't that make them alot weaker??? I'm just curious I've never seen anybody that's personal run the hummer portals.

i think by flipping the rear axle and moving it to the front, its a HP that runs on the drive side??

i dunno, too confusing to think about

The front would run bacward, on the drive side. The rear would run on the coast side, but with the large hypoid offset of a 9", it's not nearly as large a problem as a 44 or 60 running on the coast side.

I've seen it done on Dave Kemner's supermod Neuroc buggy (#830, full circle 4x4 / skunkworks fab)...pretty neat setup. He actually runs a VW bus motor in it, which turned the opposite way to begin with. He put a reversed cam in it to run it in the standard direction.

They sound cool, but I think it would be easier and stronger to run mog 404 or preferably 416 portal boxes on a set of high 9's. I'll have to look up some pics of that rig it sounds interesting. Do hummer boxes come standard with the central tire inflation system? I know you can get the option on mog axles but it's kind of expensive. I don't know how practical it would be, but it would be cool to be able to adjust tire pressure without getting out of the rig.
