Looking for a NP242 to swap out my 249 for. The cheaper the better , im runnin out of pockets to empty.

let me know what you have to sell

Ill keep my eyes open at the junkyards for you

Thanks i work in SB and there is one off waterman N and 6th. Have not had any time head out there to even check the ujoint style axle shafts there also and im only 5 miles away:bawl:what would the jy charge me for 242 ? Might have to wait for the half off day.

I swap in a 231 in the wife's zj a while back. There are debates about the231 242. The 231 seems to be stronger and has a lot more aftermarket. And 231 are easier to come by

a year and a half ago when i was looking for a 231 for a friend, i found more 242s than i did 231s. it was weird. but this was for a renix year with the 21 spline.

Well made it to work and nothing fell off on the freeway im just trying to get by daily driving the zj. Tried checking craigslist and didnt find to much out there

this is true. the weak point in the 242 is the shift fork inside, they bend and boom you can't shift it anymore. also there is little to no support for upgrading the 242. I swapped a 242 into my DD though because I like the full time option for driving in wet weather (especially if the wife is driving :eyes:)

Is the used np242 the same price as a new np249? Im not going that route just curious lol not after what i experienced. The d35 and np249 must be relatives

the miliken PYP is just off the 15/60. aperently you just missed half price days this past weekend. the regular price for a 242 is $125. if you bring them a core (your old transfer case) you can get $15 back.

The problem with the 249 is the viscous coupling inside. Once they go it's 800 for a new one. The 242 and 231 are huge upgrades over it. Also the 231 or 242 will save you a lot more gas. My wife was commuting from phelan to Redlands at the time. She used 1/3 less gas with the 231. As Grimm said the full time 4wd is nice but if the weather is thath bad I lock the 231 in and don't go very fast anyway. Either way you go you will need to take the front Input out of the 249 and put it in either the 231 or 242. While you have the case open you might as well put in a sye and run a cv shaft. Doing the 231 with sye and cv shaft was still cheaper than replacing the 249 when I did mine. It seems like a lot but it isn't that bad. Easily doable in a day.

/Thread, if anyone finds a second 231 let me know. lol.

I need the strength for my 5.9. Although with the 5.9 2wd isn't much fun. Spins the tires REALLY easy.

InlandZJ have you looked for the swap thread on NAGCA? There is a pretty good write up on their.

Yea, i do want an idea on how to do this under my rig. I was headed over to NAGCA but working all day trying to get a sales report together and not enough time for my Zj.

stix, thats a good price compared to the 400 or 800 bails and other fellas were talkin brand new. I was tempted to sell a couple times not just because this bump in the road tcase. man dumping 400 and 500 here and there and i have not even replaced the motor yet. i might invest 24k in it like this other guy lol on the board :eyes:

That is the whole reason I sold the wife's zj. It over heated like a bitch and nothing fixed it. The t case took a shit and took the front shafts like it did on yours. Replaced shot wheel bearings all the way around due to the v8. And come to find out the 44a rear end isn't anymore desirable than the d35. Also I thought having the 5.2 v8 in it was going to be the bees knees but I was way off. All it was was a gas guzzler. I thought the zj would have been a good car but it wasn't realistic for me. I love the way they look and they way they ride but it was just too much to deal with for it to be a DD for my wife. Having the 231 was a huge impact though. After the swap it was just a lot more economical and just felt like new car. Not having to turn all 4 wheels made it feel like a race car when in 2wd. Brothers 4x4 in Ontario did the swap for me before I knew there was nothing to tearing open a 231. Had I have known it was so easy I would have done it myself.
