Spitting fuel out is usually the result of an intake valve problem.

Engine is a great big pump on the compression stroke. If an intake valve is open--woosh--back out through the intake and the carb.

Could you just be flooding? Take the wooden handle of a hammer and tap the side of the carb around the float.
