WJ Front Drive Shaft needs replaced (what in the hell is it?)

Here's the scoop. 00 WJ (Grand Cherokee) 4.7l motor, Quad trak 4x4 system. (that means the t-case is 247)

The front drive shaft is loose, causing vibes and wearing out seals and bearing on the t-case.

It's not a double car.... you know what I mean. (two U-joints together) It's got what appears to be CV type joints at the ends (one even moves in and out) Wish I had the digital camera for this one.

What kind of joints are those and where does one find a good replacement or rebuilt front drive shaft?

Thanks

Yeah I would like to know too, I have the same issue, sort of, my t-case is fine but the front diff keeps eating seals and pinion bearings, I suspect the front shaft

It is a type of c-v joint. Chrysler has a replacement that is a true dual cardan. You will have to check at your local dealership $$$

Four wheeler magazine did a write up on this a while back, but I'll be dammed if I can find that issue right now. It will turn up when I'm moving stuff on the shelves as it falls and hits me right square in the face. Anyway they recommended you replace it with a Double Cardan, because the stock piece was a very shitty design as evidenced by Chrysler's replacement being a double vardan. It is some kind of ball and cup deal if memory serves me and the balls get old and start to get loose.

FYI: That joint is similar to the Birfields that the Yota's use on the front axles. Not to sure if is called the same thing though.

My dad had his go bad on his 98 5.9L ZJ. He had Tom Woods build him a new shaft thats just like a cherokee. DC joint in one end and a regular joint in the other...The only thing he had to do was replace the Yoke at the axle. After he did this he didn't have any more vibe probs. I guess if you take them to the dealer to have it fixed they do the same thing but for three times the $$$$.
