WinterFest 2012

Not planning on attending this one but would like to someday. My big question is about the registration/insurance, what if your rig is a trailered rig that is not street legal therefore cannot be registered or have a need for insurance? I understand the insurance is more of a liability so if you flop your rig, any passengers or spectators nearby will be covered if injured. Was just wondering since there's alot of people on here that have dedicated trailer queens that don't see pavement.

You can register your rig as a ORV with the state of Indiana. They will give you a sticker to display on your vehicle as proof of reg. It costs $30 and is valid for 3 years. ORV insurance should be fairly cheap.

IIRC there are a few people in the MWC that have done this.

Does your regular insurance actually cover this?

That is what Liability is for.... if you kill jo blow it is what covers you I believe.

Right, if you're driving down the road - but if you have your XJ propped in some precarious situation (on purpose), does it cover you then?

Dougie Doug, there will be an open seat for ya with someone I am sure. I am possibly trading off my XJ in the very near future so chances are I wont have a rig by then anyhow, but I will probably just drive out for a few days, eat, drink and be merry and possibly jump in with someone for a trail or two. It is the gathering that makes the trip, the wheeling comes in way farther down the list in my opinion.

That's fine for those that live in IN, but what about those that travel there from other states that don't do such a thing. Granted I live in a country town that has very lax laws and could probably get a tube buggy registered to drive on the roads and insured but was just curious. As for insurance covering it if you flop it on purpose I'm not sure, but would venture to guess it's a no.

Edit: Tennessee law pertaining to registering off road only vehicles

Under certain circumstances, the owner may apply for a certificate of title; however, Tennessee statute does not currently provide for the registration of off-the-road vehicles of any nature, and as such, vehicles of this nature cannot be operated on roadways and highways of Tennessee. For more information see Tenn. Code Ann. Sections 55-3-101(c)(1) through 55-3-101(c)(4).

Edit: Edit: Tennessee may not have an offroad vehicle registration but I wonder if our crawlers would classify as low speed vehicles.

Low-Speed Vehicles

A low-speed vehicle is defined as a vehicle with four wheels that has a capacity to run between 20 and 25 mph―for instance, an electric vehicle you can drive around in your neighborhood. The vehicle is allowed to be driven only on roads with a maximum speed limit of 35 mph or less.
Low-speed vehicles must be titled and registered. You'll need to complete a Low Speed Vehicle Affidavit and submit it, along with the required registration application and your ID, to your local County Clerk's office.

I'm pretty confident you can register an ORV in Indiana even if you don't live there.

I'm cross-posting this from the Winterfest Requirements thread, should clear it up:

• Legally required automobile insurance and registration;

Just like it says.....if your vehicle is not "legally required" to have insurance, then there you go, same for registration.

Of course.....I would urge EVERYONE to have some type of insurance should the unthinkable happen, but that is your choice.

During tech we do not check for insurance or registration, we concentrate on things that can result in damage or injury, or the prevention of, to others. Registration and insurance are YOUR responsibility, not ours, however, the rule states our position on it.

Ok that helps clear it up, like I said not planning on going this year but would like to get up there one year.
