Winter camping

I was actually east of the Sangres at the southern edge of the Greenhorn ridge, north of Badito Cone... on a failed elk hunt (but successful camp!)

I'm not interested in camping. I just had to say that it's nice to see XJs used for something other than rock magnets.

Y'all need a big wall tent with a wood burning stove....that makes winter camping fun!

Hard to fit that in the Jeep. :D

If your sleeping bag is of good quality then the tent doesn't need to be heated, my Coleman is rated for 0deg and my 3-piece modular sleep system Uncle Sam gave me is rated for -30deg. My Coleman is big enough I can even sleep in the Army bag inside the Coleman for even more warmth, not that I've needed to.

I fit a massive wall tent & stove in my Jeep, just have to get clever packing it all in, but it is doable.....just take less s#it with you! :D

But the reason I like it was when the sun went down and it got colder than crap or started snowing, everyone piled inside the tent, fired up the stove, and sat around and played cards.

Oh man....

I'm excited. Just went over to the Kershaw website to look at knives, as I lost my beloved blur that gave me 2.5 years of extremely abusive bulletproof performance. Man, I just thought Kershaw made folding knives. I may have just found a replacement for my BK-7 there as well.

Supposin' I should start a Christmas list to give to the in-laws.

Nothing like a loaded set of in-laws...

So do we have a full head count? Who's all coming? Does anyone have room for a +1? If I don't have to take my Jeep, I'd rather leave her at home.

Are we decided on Slaughterhouse? If so; I'm pretty much on the way, and know a back way to avoid a massive chunk of 285. I pack light(one bag), and as I said; I can pitch gas money, beer, food, whatever.

I need to talk to the wife still. She won't go so I need to make sure she's cool stating at home with the kid.

I think I'm leaving my old lady @ home with the kid as well. Too cold for either of them right now anyway. My lady may change her mind and have the kiddo spend the night @ Grandma's house ....but I doubt it.

Dutch, do you still have a bike? I saw you posting on ADVRider a few months back. You had a KLR650, no? and then am I mistaken, or did you get an older BMW of some sort?

Worst case scenario if my buddy doesn't come up, I feel to guilty to wheel the XJ, and no one wants to +1 me, I may ride my CRF450X up.

I just officially got word that I've got the time off. I'm open for Friday into Saturday, Friday through Sunday, Saturday into Sunday...

I'm good for Saturday - Sunday. I can fit another person in my rig no problem.

I had a KLR and after it was totaled swapped it out for a KTM 950 Adventure that I then traded for a KTM 640 Enduro. That bike was sold off so now I've just got the Jeep and my big Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Vaquero. I'm not taking the bagger up the mountains so the Jeep it is. :D

My tent is a fairly large Coleman so I can fit more people in it (probably 4 adults total). I've also got an extra cot or two I can bring. Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned Army issue ones. I swear I bought them from the surplus store. :D

The wife and i are in. Just give me a heads up for the date. Let me know if you are going thanksgiving i might be able to go.

Let's do slaughterhouse the 29th until 1st if anyone wants to stay 2 nights.

Or just Saturday night and go up around noon.

I'm all for winter camping. As Doug said, we 'll be camping the weekend of Dec 7th. Most likely around Bunce/Iron Clads.

I might be down for Slaughter House with you guys. Probably just for 1 night though.

As for the cold, that's what camp fires and whiskey are for.

I'd be down with winter camping. I look for any reason to get away from civilization for a few days. Just a matter of coming preparred and insulating the area between you and the ground while sleeping. It's a lot of fun.

Do we have an official head count yet?

Saw a bit of interest from a couple of you, I know we're waiting for a confirmation from Dutch, is it just going to be 720Tim, who he's bringing, and myself?

I'm unpacking, double checking, and repacking my pack tomorrow.

Tim - I'll snag up that +1. Unless Dutch ends up coming and he's got a shotgun seat for me.

Since I'm going to +1 I'll have the funds that would have typically gone towards fuel for anything the group needs. Just let me know.

Hope everyone's Thanksgiving was pleasant.

Cheers

I got the axle done but with a camping trip already planned for next weekend and this weekend having such nice weather forecast I'm going to pass on this one so I can get some stuff done to the Jeep and around the house.
