Window crank question

Is it possible to go from power windows to manuel windows? I rather deal with the cranks than the power stuff.

Not easy or cheap; Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but just about all cars today, the electric windows vs manual windows are an entirely different assembly that comes whole, not just a simple drive unit that snaps in.

The only practical way to do it is too find a junkyard donor car, that the owner is willing to allow you to do a swap at a reasonable cost. You can get all the extra different pieces as well, for a reasonable cost, like the door skins, crank handles and inserts where the switches went. You'll probably have to drill out some large pop rivets and then pop in new rivets during the swap.

I wouldn't be surprised if only the glass is the common part, even the rails and frame the glass rides up and down on are often different for manual/electric on most cars.

wow that doesn't sound like any fun. maybe I should just stick with my power stuff.

Get the parts catalog, theres a link in one of the threads on the board to a site that has them the catalogs for download.

Look up the parts numbers and prove me wrong, I could be.

BUT, its NOT usually as simple as you would imagine. That you pop the door skin and pull off a motor on the top of the assembly and then pop on a manual drive for a crank handle. Usually they've engineered an entire different drive system with different rails, etc. Then they pop rivet the entire assembly within the door.

i went from manual to power about 5 years ago and from what i can remember is that the only thing you will need to change is the regulator.

Hopefully its different than the other cars I dealt with, but the regulator was litterally 90% of the window raise/lower mechanism. Sound like it might be different on the XJ, which would be good news.

What was the regulator? you just had to pull a central gear unit with the cables, a couple of screws and unhook the cables? And then swap in the other unit?

I have an '89 XJ two door with manual windows. I just replaced the manual regulator yesterday. Took all of about 15 minutes to do.

I also think the difference between manual and power is in the regulator assembly. If thats so, all you would need is the manual aregulator and a crank handle.

It is held in by six 1/4" rivets. You will need a heavy duty pop riveter and large pop rivets to reinstall the regulator.

The glass is attached to the regulator by one screw with plastic washer on each side.
