why are fewer wraps stronger than each successive wrap?

Because the spool diameter grows with each succesive layer

Kinda how stock gears are ok with stock tires, but suck with. 33+" tires

Torque is force x distance. You have a motor that can put constant torque on the drum of the winch, and you have a winch line that is acting at a distance on that drum. The less wraps, the smaller the radius the force from the line opposes the motor torque, the less stress on the winch, which equals more pulling power.
