Winch bumper attempt.

Ok changed my mind... Instead of buying all the front and rear bumpers and sliders and spending a G or two I decided to just buy a damn welder and do it myself. Don't hurt my feelings too bad as this is only the second time I've ever welded... Im sure some of your small children could do better but ya gotta learn somehow huh...?

This really should be in the Pic showcase.

I was heating it with my lil propane bottle to bend it flush...

How do you make her let you move the damn washer/dryer out of your workroom?

Got bored...

Sooo I'm almost to the part where I need to either make frame brackets or buy some. I'd like to incorporate the shackle tabs in with the brackets... what would you guys do? buy em or make em? Where to buy them at?

my thought it to make them, and have then go thru the bumper as one bracket instead of welding them,

thats going to be a extremely sweet @$$ bumper tho,

Buy or make, but have them go through so that you wont be pulling on your "still learning" welds

And cleaning the area your welding of rust and shit will help you get a stronger bead.

I'm jelous of your jeep cut out.

Agreed, CLEAN YOUR WELD SURFACE!!!! It makes a world of difference in the weld quality and and ease of welding. This was the BIGGEST thing I learned over the years. Your weld surface can never be too clean. Also a clean ground area.

As for getting the washer and dryer out of the work area, buying a bigger house seems to help. :D

Great start for first time welding. BTW, for your shackle tabs, build them like a T so the hole for the shackle comes through the front and the T part locks it in on the back. This way you have a lot more weld surface area which will be stronger plus the backup of it not being able to pull through being locked in the hold in the bumper. Never hurts to go a little overboard when you are learning. Better to be a little bigger, heavier and not a pretty then have it fail. Nice thing is most of the welding would be on the backside of the bumper anyways.

Keep up the great work!

"Accidently" use her washer and/or dryer for some practice welding:dunno:?

Turn the washer into a solvent tank /parts washer.

I talked her into changing the 3rd bedroom that we never use into the laundry room and make the office the spare bedroom! THe dryer/washer issue is solved.

I did grind a some on all the edges to clean the metal before I did it and hit it with a wire brush but I now know that it's gunna take more than that!
I'm definitly going overboard on welding since it's my first go around. I'll keep all of your ideas in mind... Thanks for the tips...

x2 on the thor brackets.:yelclap: I picked up a pair last week and am going to build my bumper in a few weeks. How did you model out your bumper? Im thinking about just mocking it up with cardboard.
