Just curious who's headed out this Oct, Wondering who I may see on the road..

When do you depart and when do you return? Camping at Slickrock (event HQ) or motel in town?

I'll be leaving early am on the 4th and expect to return home around the 25/26th.

I have a similar thread in SEC, I'm leaving from Virginia on the 3rd and will be leaving moab the 13th headed back home. I'll mostly be taking I64 and I70.

Ill be staying in Slickrock

I'm planning on towing black jeep out there with the Dodge. I'll be leaving some point on the 4th too for a straight drive out. I'll be taking my time and maybe doing a southern route home thru Texas and stuff. I plan to be back for the 19th or 20th. I was planning on camping, but my Mom works at a Renaissance Hotel so it looks like she can hook me up with a family rate at the Hampton Inn or whatever it is out there.

There is a Hampton Inn in Moab, but they are part of Hilton, not Marriott chain. They still may provide a decent rate for other hotel employees. I checked their regular rates, and the Hampton is extremely proud of their rooms. I grabbed a room using points. Now, I just have to work out logistics to be able to get there.

My Mom has an in, we used a Hampton Inn last time we went to Jackson Hole. She works her magic and gets a steal of a hookup.

im planing on it. im going to follow ross. Ill probably camp as the fuel bill will already have me pinching pennies. pat is supposed to ride down with me and stay a week and fly back home.

dam I just did the math again and building in some excess miles and 4.00/gal its gona cost me just shy of 4500$ just in gas.

Gas guzzler!!! I'm planning on under $2k in fuel costs. Ugh, I'm gonna have to stop all the damn time for you to fuel up. I'm shooting for 400 mile tanks

yea Iv read it gets ~6mpg towing so with my 44gal tank would get me 260. I was hoping for 10mpg and was what I originally made my budget out for.

but its all flat past PA so who knows. with cruise on and you out in front breaking the air, I might close to 10.

how many miles is the route you plan on taking?

I estimated 2800@4$ a gal X2. just to build in a safety. I figure it will be more like [email protected]

flat? you wish. its hillier than you think. but your gas estimates are almost at least $.50/gal high. national average is $3.65/gal, but the midwest states are CHEAP.

from gas buddy:

charleston, WV $3.53
lexington, KY $3.39
indianapolis, IN $3.42
st. louis, MO $3.43

wish i was going :-((((

its gonna take a miracle for me to make it out there this year. definately not in my truck.

LOL... I was going to tell him at add 15% to his numbers, for "incidental's". Bury it in your gas money estimate, but know its there in case the alternator quits in the parking lot at that TA truck stop in Nebraska...

And if you go the northern route, there are looonnngg flat sections where you should be able to set the cruise on the Burb and get 10-12 mpg, maybe better. I remember setting the cruise in the Jeep, and letting go of the steering wheel because the road is crowned for drainage. I spent that time climbing around inside my XJ refilling my cooler, getting a snack, changing clothes...etc... Didn't touch the steering wheel for almost 20 miles (or more). When you get to Denver however, all bets are off. There are a few long flat sections between Denver and Moab, but not many. Make sure the Burb is top-notch mechanically too, with fresh brakes/discs/drums too, because what goes up must come down....and those hills are really steep out there.

Like nothing out here for sure. You can read about how steep they are on the internet, but you sure don't expect it until you are there.

I remember having trouble holding 35-40 mph in my xj on the highway at times lol.

If anything else goes wrong on the burb im going to have to have a long talk with jordans mechanic.

I already had to replace the brake lines that blew out on the way home. Leaving me stranded in a snow storm.

But the rest is mecanicly sound.

Adam throw me some $ for gas and you can ride with us in the burb. I can seat 4 comfortably.

LoL! Talk to Andy, the mechanic is his high school buddy:wave: Honestly though, it should be in good shape .... but a trip like that can be rough on any vehicle.

This might sound like blasphemy, but have you considered not taking your Jeep? I know, I know .... but hear me out.

$5k on gas, tolls, and other travel costs is a lot of money. A LOT of money.

You could ride out with someone (or drive the blue car), ride passenger with lots of different people, meet new folks, see the sights, enjoy the whole experience, take pictures etc etc etc .... have a completely stress and hassle free vacation .... and save the $4,000 to fund Jeep repairs/upgrades and local wheeling trips in the future.

I've got a feeling that just BEING in Moab for the 30th anniversary celebration will be an awesome experience in and of itself. Sure, having your Jeep with you would be awesome, but is it really worth $4k?

Him speaketh some amount of truth here... no matter what, it is an amazing place and a great experience, and I am sure you'll have no trouble finding a shotty seat.

But also consider that if you don't do it now, 10 years from now when your married and have 6 kids, you'll be kicking yourself for not doing the WHOLE experience.

I still don't get how Stefan is figuring almost $5k in fuel. Realistically I'll actually be around $1500 and that's still with some safety factor built in. I'm planning for 5k miles total (should be a little less), 11.75mpg (more likely to get around 14), and $4/gal (should be more in the high $3 range). That still only gives me 1700.

I plan on doing one more real trip out there before I have kids.

I remember when you smoked your brakes out in California

I wish. I can't even afford to take off from work right now. But who knows, I could be living in another state in a few months.
