Which 3" springs?

1989 Limited. I want to stick to 3" lift max. This is mostly a daily driver, but I want to make it fun in the desert and trails. What would be the best 3" coils for mild prerunning?
Thanks in advance

you're going to want to be higher up after your first trip out, just warning you. at only 3" of lift you're going to be on your bumpstops on just about every bump you hit at speed. From personal experience even 4.5" coils and 3.5" rear leaf springs with a 2" extended shackle was too little for me, your experience may vary though.

my jeep is my DD at 5.5 inches and i wouldnt mind if it were another inch.

unless you're 4'6" or are afraid of heights i would say go with a 5 or 6 inch and you're sure to be happy all around.

if you're looking for ride quality, go with an Old Man Emu lift. i think the largest they make is 3 or 3.5

2.75" I is their largest coil IIRC, Great ride on and off road but too soft for bumps at speed. I believe they have a 150 or 160 lb/in spring rate. You could take a taller lift coil and cut it down (they tend to be higher rate) or use skyjacker coils, Ive read those coils have a close to 240 lb/in spring rate.

The best lift I've ever had was a 3" Rancho. I put it on my new 1984 XJ in June of 84 with RS 5000 shocks. I was able to run 31x10.50 15 tires on the stock wheels. It rubbed a little on the rear inner finder wells on ruff trails, but a bit of black paint took care of that at oil change time. The spare still fit inside. At 140,000 miles I had to replace the bushings.

Lifting the Cherokee is going to effect your mpg. More lift = less mpg.

Sorry, I really should have been more specific in my first post. I'm not afraid of going bigger. This is my second xj. The first was a '00 with 6" of lift, 35's, locked f&r, armor, yadda yadda… I did mostly rockcrawling then, but now I'm more into running through the desert and exploring, along with trail runs and still being somewhat DD/family oriented. I know it's a lot to ask, but if any rig could do it, it's the xj :) I'm not planning to race jeepspeed, just more mild prerunner type stuff. I'm a pretty experienced driver and I know the capabilities and limitations of the vehicle. That being said, I know that the xj can perform really well with a 3-4 inch lift and 31-33 inch tires. Another big concern for me (as well as many others I'm sure) is budget. Smaller lift/tires will cost less and get better mileage. The main reason I ask about a good 3 inch spring is that I know most of them are fairly soft and will work great for trails and stuff, but I'm not sure which would be better for higher speed stuff. Do I want a shorter/stiffer spring, or a longer/softer one? I know my last xj did great on the rocks, but bottomed out too easily going fast. I also wanted to stick with 3 inch lift so that I could stay away from long arms or drop brackets for now. Down the road I can see going that route, but it's not on option at this point. I've read a lot about the F150 coils and they sound like they may be a good option. I've even seen some moog variable rate ones. Thanks for all the advice!

A stiff spring and decent shock are what you are going to want. Run the 31's and trim the crap out of the fenders, that way you get as much up travel as possible. a 240lb/in spring will take ~50% more force to fully compress than a 160lb/in spring. So a 3" 240lb/in spring will fully compress at the same force as a 4.5" 160lb/in spring will fully compress. Before I get flamed for ignoring other variables I know this was way over generalized the it's mainly to get the idea out there.

Take a look at the new springs Troy has at BigOffroad. They are made to his specifications by Alcan. I've been running BigOffroad springs on my stroker for about 8 years and they still work great.
