In regards to Louisiana, Mississippi, etc. Has anyone heard of other countries extending their help?

Venezuela offered manpower, food and fuel. Bet Bush loves that after all the crap he's been giving President Chavez.

If they really did make that offer, I'd say they deserve at least a tip of the hat for being one of very few nations that have even considered lending a hand when we got hit by a disaster of one sort or another. The late Gordon Sinclair no doubt would have approved.

Got any references to confirm?

venezuela needs to send a few tankers of oil this way if they really wanna help out. sheesh!

gota love how we pour $$$ into other nations for disaster relief, not to mention helping after we bomb the S*** outta them, but were on our own when it happens to us- but hey, its all about priorities, and we know bush puts IRAQ on top of that list

CARACAS (AFP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offered to send food and fuel to the United States after the powerful Hurricane Katrina pummeled the US south, ravaging US crude production.

The leftist leader, a frequent critic of the United States and a target himself of US disapproval, said Venezuela could send aid workers with drinking water, food and fuel to US communities hit by the hurricane.

"We place at the disposition of the people of the United States in the event of shortages -- we have drinking water, food, we can provide fuel," Chavez told reporters.Chavez said fuel could be sent to the United States via a Citgo refinery that has not been affected by the hurricane. Citgo is owned by Venezuela's state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).

In the Gulf of Mexico, which accounts for a quarter of total US oil output, 92 percent of crude and 83 percent of natural gas production were shut down due to Hurricane Katrina, which slammed Louisiana and Mississippi, according to US government data.

Venezuela is the fourth-largest provider of oil to the United States, supplying some 1.5 million barrels a day.

Last week, Chavez offered discount gasoline to poor Americans suffering from high oil prices and on Sunday offered free eye surgery for Americans without access to health care.

Interesting that Citgo is owned by Venezuela. There are some other articles about international response to Katrina, but most of it is just moral support. Most of the countries we have helped in the past can't take care of their own people so have little to offer us.

It would be nice for one of the countries we help to reciprocate, but the difference is that we don't really "Need" any assistance. We have the resources, just need to get them inline.

Reguardless of "free oil", it will not make a big impact without the means to refine it.

I believe I heard somewhere 7 refineries were knocked out, 3 of which produce gasoline.

Actually, I misquoted. The offer specifically mentioned discounted gasoline. I didn't have much emotion dedicated to the president of Venezuela before, but he's moved ahead of Pat Robertson on my list now.

As far as our "needs" being different than those in other countries, let me relieve everyone else of their PC angst. I'll go ahead and be a complete ass. When the tsunami hit "over there" I thought, "Well, that sucks. I guess my tax dollars will be headed over there soon." I don't donate money to any overseas organizations, EVER. I donate to local VFD's and rescue squads, and other local organizations. I donate blood to the local blood bank. However, I DON'T CARE about donating to overseas relief. F them. I DO care about donating to organizations that help refugees that LEGALLY immigrate to the United States of America.

Once you are an American Citizen, you are my neighbor and my concern. Until then you are either an asset or a liability, either the military or financial sort.

YES. Most of the world owes us. The parts that don't now will soon after we get around to "liberating" them in a decade or so.

Before anyone gets started on the national debt and the international aspects thereof, please bring a spreadsheet thereof balancing our investments in countries as a whole vs. private financers and corporations. Do we really owe money to Europe and Asia, or is it the other way around?
I wish the United States of America would start acting like a global police force, and less like a rich parent to spoiled children.

sorry you have such a shitty impression of the world, for if one were to think like you, the majority of aircraft in the CONUS on 9/11 should have been directed to the ocean, for why would we want them in MY COUTRY, the are not MY CITIZENS, the population of my country is less than that of NYC, but we open out hearts and our minds to most all, at the expense of extreme taxes and personal expense, we will never vote from the roof-tops here, perhaps you should look at your own personal foreign policy, and hopefully come to the realization that 95% of the worlds population are "good" people...................................Canadadian Air Force doing SAR in New England, 3 Canadian Navy ships deployed to the US Gulf Coast (i think we only have like 7), aircraft and private industry..............dishing out alot, to our neighbours..............................too bad when half our country was in the dark...........in the snow............with no electricity............that we got help from our neighbours...............our number one trade partner.............man its kinda messed up..............but will whell with ya anyday..............just don't drop a bomb on me
