Where to buy 5/8" carbide drill bit?

I have looked at home depot, ACE, baxters, and harbor freight.. Where do I find a drill bit the will have a chance with drilling out knuckles? So far I bought a black coated 5/8" milwaukie bit but it's only rated for soft steel!

www.mscdirect.com - solid carbide or carbide tipped.

I'd probably go with a "straight flute" drill with something like this - it's stronger. I know they have those in carbide tipped - I just checked. I've already put the book back (I was just taking a skim,) but if I can find them in the Big Book, you should be able to find them on the site.

Order a copy of the Big Book - it's free, and you'll find it useful.

What part are you trying to drill? I don't think your looking for a carbide bit there for drilling brick or concrete. I think what your looking for is a cobalt bit. I have a set of them at work but only up to half inch. I have not found anything I am not able to drill though with them. Also research proper tool speed on the net. If you spin the 5/8 bit to fast or to slow it will not cut right also make sure you make the proper size pilot hole. O and use cutting oil or some sort of cooling agent It will help a lot.

And I do care you got an iPad. I love mine and it's the old crappy one.

Dave, Cobalt is exactly what I meant. I'm thinking about taking them to someone with a drill press... That should help with constant steady drill speed.

Bring them over I have a press. I was just thinking knuckles are not that hard so I had to try.

I drilled that 1/4" hole in about 15 sec.

With that 1/4" drill at 2500rpm with an el cheepo jobber bit

My bit is brand new. I'm just Researching before I open it. It looks identical to the one you used just bigger.

You free tomorrow? Sounds like it should be quick.. I'll bring both knuckles and the pitman arm

Great place and great people! I have bought many tools and replacement parts from them over the years. Just a few weeks ago I called them for some parts for my Milwaukee Sawzall. They didn't have them but had them drop shipped to my door step 2nd day for $11.95 shipping.

Those gold "plated" bits are actually titanium nitride coated. They help with steel but are definately not recommended for aluminum. The aluminum tends to stick and gall.

No one is freaking out. He didn't know and wanted to ask before he did something wrong. For him stumbling upon WJ knuckles for a decent price don't happen every day.

Anyway the holes are drilled to the proper size, the proper way square and true. We used his plain old black oxide coated jobber bit and worked just fine. So we all can move on and leave the poor guy alone.
